The U.S. Navy is actively working to enhance its operational capabilities by integrating unmanned systems with manned fleets, creating a powerful "hybrid fleet" led by the 4th Fleet in the Western Hemisphere. As detailed at the Sea Air Space conference, this integration facilitates a "Reese’s effect" where the combined force is greater than its individual components. However, managing the vast data generated from these systems poses significant challenges due to inconsistent formats and proprietary issues among contractors. Australia and the US have unveiled new prototype uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs), Ghost Shark and Manta Ray, respectively, to enhance Pacific naval defenses. These UUVs represent advancements in undersea warfare, aiming to exert power while minimizing human risk. Ghost Shark, developed by Australia and Anduril Australia, promises stealthy, long-range capabilities for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike missions. The US's Manta Ray, developed by Northrop Grumman, emphasizes modularity for various missions and ease of transport and assembly. Both projects face challenges in underwater communications and energy requirements but mark significant progress in military UUV technology. We are excited to announce that the US Navy is using Sofar’s Wayfinder platform to enhance safe routing at sea. ?? The Navy’s two primary weather forecasting centers, Fleet Weather Center - Norfolk (FWC-N) and Fleet Weather Center San Diego (FWC-SD), leverage Wayfinder’s optimized voyage guidance to identify safe and efficient route options for Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships. Wayfinder uses real-time data collected by Sofar’s global network of Spotter buoys to automatically generate a forecast along a vessel’s route and significantly reduce weather uncertainty. This empowers FWC personnel to validate forecast models, examine a vessel’s potential route options more efficiently, and reduce manual tasks. “Powered by our real-time ocean weather sensor network, Wayfinder will help the Navy scale its routing operations to support a heterogeneous fleet operating in conditions made more extreme by the effects of climate change,” said Tim Janssen, co-founder and CEO of Sofar. The Navy is piloting Wayfinder under U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (CNMOC) and Sofar’s five-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Well done Brian; great article! “The space domain remains completely underdeveloped regarding providing terrestrial materiel support and offers an ideal platform to sustain smaller units of action within the joint force, which would otherwise divert aircraft or naval vessels that could be used to support larger formations. Creating a proliferated satellite constellation in low earth orbit (LEO) to enable space-based logistics negates the need for access basing and overflight, mitigates the need for being overly reliant on intermediate staging bases, and promises to extend the medical golden hour to compensate for the tyranny of distance. Space-based logistics can facilitate the delivery of blood, weapons, 3D-printed parts, power, and food to the joint force and has the potential for delivery time to be measured in minutes, not hours or days.”
