Airbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) to facilitate the establishment of a Sustainable Aviation Hub with a specific focus on technology, research and innovation. Under this MOU, both parties intend to enter into discussions to facilitate Airbus’ establishment of the Sustainable Aviation Hub in Singapore. The Hub will bring together aerospace professionals, researchers, and innovators to create a collaborative environment that promotes research and development aimed at building a robust and environmentally sustainable aviation ecosystem. Cathay Pacific’s latest Business Class product, the Aria Suite, has become a highlight in aviation and travel news over the past week, particularly for its human-centric design. “We’ve done a lot of work to make advanced technology almost invisible because we know a lot of our customers look for travel as an escape. For example, we’re the first airline that has the ability for customers to customise all the settings with just one touch – the seat and the lighting all move together," said Vivian Lo, Cathay's General Manager Customer Experience and Design. We are thrilled to share the latest update on the partnership between Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline and Trinity College Dublin, extending their collaboration to advance sustainable aviation research until the end of the decade. This extension comes alongside a generous additional donation of €2.5 million, bringing the total funding for the Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Centre to €4 million. Since its inception in September 2021, the research center has been dedicated to tackling the complex challenges of sustainable aviation, focusing on areas such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), zero carbon aircraft propulsion systems, and non-CO2 emissions from aviation. Over the past three years, the center has made significant strides in various research domains, including the sustainability of different SAF types, reducing certification costs for new SAF candidates, and evaluating the operational impact of zero carbon aircraft propulsion systems. One particularly promising result of this research is the potential to reduce emission intensity by 43% for passengers traveling on a Boeing 737-800 NG flight from Amsterdam to Dublin using a 50% SAF blend. Furthermore, the introduction of Ryanair's 'Gamechanger' Boeing 737-8200, which is 16% more fuel-efficient, offers even greater potential for emissions reduction. Thomas Fowler, Ryanair's Director of Sustainability, emphasised the importance of continued support for such research in achieving ambitious sustainability goals, including Net Zero by 2050 and a 12.5% SAF target by 2030. Dr. Linda Doyle, Trinity's Provost and President, expressed gratitude for Ryanair's support, highlighting Trinity's commitment to sustainability and its growing reputation as a hub for sustainable aviation research. Professor Sinead Ryan, Dean of Research at Trinity, emphasized the multidisciplinary approach taken in advancing sustainable aviation and the importance of ongoing support from partners like Ryanair to drive innovations and improvements in commercial aviation. This partnership between Ryanair and Trinity exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing global challenges. The 2024 edition of Airline Economics Growth Frontiers Asia Pacific conference happened last week at the Ritz-Carlton in Singapore. As usual, Aviation News brought many interesting panels, discussions and networking options. It was interesting to learn the perspective of other companies in the “Trading and Investing in mid-life to late life Aircraft & Engines” panel. This panel was moderated by Ran Ackerman (MK Aviation S.A.) and counted with the participation of Paul O'Dwyer (ORIX Aviation), Marie RYAN (Avolon), Marc Iarchy (World Star Aviation), John Duffy (SKY Leasing) and Dimuth Fernando (AIP Capital), who presented their individual perspectives and projections specific for this type of assets. The FL Technics asset trading team focuses on this market, purchasing airframes/engines for teardown, and engines to repair/modify at FLTES (our engine shop in Kaunas, Lithuania) extending service time and improving EGT margin for subsequent resale. There is a very high demand for mid-life engines, and we’ll soon have another SV CFM56-7B26, among others for sale. Thanks to Bellinger Asset Management to the great event at their rooftop with beautiful views of Singapore. Thanks to SKY Leasing for the invitation to the fun event at the Mandarin Oriental.
