?? It’s Recycle Week! ?? We’re joining the nation in celebrating Recycle Week 2024 (14th - 20th October). This year's theme is ‘Rescue Me’ and it’s all about rescuing those recyclable items that might sometimes find their way into the rubbish bin. It's also about making the most of our resources, whether that’s recycling materials we’ve already used, or choosing sustainable, locally sourced products. Did you know that around 80% of the timber used in the UK is imported? Just as recycling helps us reduce waste and conserve resources, supporting the use of UK-grown timber helps us manage our woodlands sustainably and reduce our reliance on imported materials. By doing so, we can lower our environmental impact and foster a more resilient, self-sufficient timber industry here in the UK. Let’s use this week to think about how we can make small changes that have a big impact - whether that’s recycling one more item each day or choosing products made from sustainable, homegrown timber. #RecycleWeek #RescueMe

We’ve recently started collecting soft plastics in our office to take to our nearest soft plastics recycling collection point. It's a simple but powerful change that helps keep these tricky-to-recycle materials out of landfills. ?? Want to get involved? The Before Photo ?? The end-of-life plastic in these bales could go into landfill where they would decompose for up to 500 years, possibly more. We'd prefer to see it become benches and settings, decking, bollards or infrastructure equipment where it can serve our community again, and again, and again. ? That's where Brett McLean and the team at GT Recycling Pty Ltd come in. There are many cogs in the recycling machine that allow us to do what we do: ? Industry and Community making responsible choices; ? Government and Councils supporting green initiatives; ? A market eager to seek out recycled options and close the loop; and ? Motueka’s family-run sustainable recycling depot?Weka Peckers has just reached its one year Food & Beverage carton (F&B carton) #recycling anniversary, reporting an incredible exponential curve on take up. We recently visited the site and were delighted to hear from Merv and Ricarda about their journey in this space. As the region's one and only collector of F&B cartons, they've had to build awareness from the ground up, but it's working. While it took them six months to reach their first tonne of cartons (which get sent to Hamilton for recycling), it took them just two months to reach their next tonne, and they have since collected four tonnes of cartons (around 50,000 Packs)! The couple are expecting to collect one tonne a month in the near future, with cartons coming from individuals and cafes/restaurants from all over the region, including Kimi Ora Eco Resort, #ReviteMotueka, #TasmanStore, #ParkCafeMarahau, #JavaHutMapua and more. #GrassRootsRecycling supports collection?for Weka Peckers in Nelson. The theme this year for Earth Day is Planet vs. Plastics. We recognize the role BeLuce plays in reducing the environmental impact. We are taking steps to help reduce the impact by participating in battery recycling with Call2Recycle / Appel à Recycler Canada. We are recycling upwards of 1.5 tons of cardboard monthly, and we are actively working towards removing the use of single-use plastic products. We realize that every effort we make as individuals or groups can make a difference because we all deserve to enjoy a healthy and thriving planet. Happy Earth Day. It’s easy to blame corporates, the government, producers of packaging, plastics manufacturers and so on, however in reality we are all responsible for the Environment. Today, SWANA proudly joins 60+ partners in advocating for two bipartisan bills that will transform the US recycling system. These bills aim to make recycling more accessible, efficient, and sustainable. Nearly 40 million US residents lack the same level of access to recycling as they have to garbage service. Many valuable recyclable materials are not captured for recycling into new packaging and materials. SWANA is committed to working toward a future where recycling is a seamless part of our lives, contributing to a healthier planet.
