Dunelm sees strong YoY growth ?? The British home furnishings retailer has experienced strong yearly growth with sales up by 4.1%, totalling ￡1.71bn. Its strong performance has been driven by a 5.1% increase in active customers, with growth across all ages, incomes and geographic cohorts. Both in-store and online sales performed strongly with digital accounting for 37% of sales compared to 36% a year prior. The retailer also opened six new stores and is looking to expand its estate by five to ten stores yearly. I took this Big Lots article from Home News and narrowed and shortened it down to just furniture information. Broyhill is a true Consumer name Brand!!, “Big Lots annual report shows 13.6% drop in overall sales, 16% decline in furniture Net sales of furniture, the chain’s largest merchandise category, slipped to $1.2 billion for the fiscal year, down 16% from fiscal 2022’s $1.4 billion. Soft retail sales, store closures and the lingering effects of the sudden shutdown of United Furniture, a major supplier to Big Lots’ Broyhill line, contributed nearly 140 basis points of sales decline year over year The Broyhill re-set We’ve been watching the chain’s responses to the sudden UFI shutdown in November 2022, seeing newly sourced upholstery for the Broyhill lineup appear on the showroom floor of our local Big Lots in late summer/early fall last year. Big Lots acquired the Broyhill name in 2018, bringing out its first product at retail under the name in late 2019 Broyhill’s brand-name equity clearly is still central to the Big Lots strategy of “extreme bargain sourcing” and being a destination location for furniture purchases. For fiscal 2023, Broyhill accounted for 8.3% of total sales, which was down significantly from a 12.4% share the year prior. That share is expected to bounce back this year. According to the company, the decrease was in large part due to UFI, the closure of which “impacted the availability of Broyhill merchandise in our stores in the first half of 2023,” according to the filing. “We fully replenished our availability of Broyhill merchandise during the second half of 2023 by restoring our Broyhill supply chain with new vendors, who we believe are more reliable.”

If you buy one large and one medium sized business and add them to your existing company, it is reasonable to expect a solid increase in sales. Unfortunately for Beyond, Inc., the company formally known as Overstock, that has not been the case. Despite the addition of both Bed Bath & Beyond and Zulily (which admittedly was only part of the business for a fraction of the latest quarter), the company only managed to push up Q1 sales by 0.3%. And it did so against the backdrop of a 28.9% decline in the prior year. That’s hardly compelling. Look at it another way. Compared to the same period in pre-pandemic 2019, Q1 sales are up by 5.2%. This may look reasonable but set against the stellar growth of the wider home furnishings market it is a massive underperformance. Despite all the effort and expense of acquiring and integrating other brands, Beyond has effectively stood still over the past five years. Now some of this is down to the more challenging market for home products, but a lot is down to its own errors – including a botched rebranding of Overstock to Bed Bath & Beyond. The brand problems are now being remedied and operations are being streamlined. However, a lot of confusion has been created among customers by all the chopping and changing and time will be needed for things to stabilize. Moreover, it’s not as if Overstock was a powerhouse before the rebrand. It was a brand where awareness was falling and where relevance was shrinking. There’s a lot of work to do to get this business back on track. Industry News: La-Z-Boy is opening new stores, despite expectations for 'volatile' furniture demand CEO says store traffic hampered by higher interest rates, low housing turnover Shares of La-Z-Boy Inc. rallied after hours on Monday after the maker of recliners and other furniture reported fourth-quarter results that topped expectations despite a "volatile" furniture industry hit by a largely frozen housing market. The company also forecast a fiscal first-quarter sales range that was above Wall Street's expectations. And it said it expects "modest sales growth" for the fiscal year ahead, which concludes around the end of April, and that it plans to open 12 to 15 new furniture galleries over that period. La-Z-Boy's stock (LZB) jumped 11% after hours. After shuttering stores at home, Bed Bath & Beyond is going global. A new licensing program includes plans to open locations in #Mexico and could extend to other Beyond Inc. brands.
