Delighted to share an op-ed I wrote with Tali Sharot in?Time?magazine today:?"Why the Internet Needs Content Labels." In our piece, we argue that just as food labels guide us to healthier choices for our bodies, content labels could guide us toward healthier digital habits for our minds. Our research, published today in?Nature Human Behavior, reveals a causal feedback loop between mental health and online behavior: individuals with poorer mental health tend to seek out negative content, which worsens their symptoms, reinforcing the cycle. To break this cycle, we tested an intervention where participants were presented with emotional “content labels” for webpages before browsing. These labels reduced the consumption of negative content and significantly improved participants' mood. Building on this, we developed a browser plugin—Digital Diet—that labels websites based on their emotional tone, practicality, and knowledge value, helping users make more informed choices online and improve their mental health. ??
