Meet first-generation Ram Grad, Valeria Casillas Payan ???? ?? Greeley, Colorado ?? Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Colorado State University | College of Natural Sciences How does it feel to be the first person in your family to graduate? "Being the first person in my family to graduate means breaking the generational barriers and kind of disproving those statistics that have told me that there's only a small percentage of people like me graduating." What motivates you? "Making my parents proud and making their sacrifices worth it." What does your diploma mean to you? "It's a step closer to my true career goals and my personal goals. I think sometimes being first generation means having an unspoken pressure on you. Not because of your parents or because of anyone else, but just that self-pressure that you have to make everything worth it and keep on going, even though you might not have the resources or the support. So, it's a very proud moment for me and means a lot to me." How has the CSU first-generation scholarship helped you get to graduation? "Not only has this scholarship allowed me to cover my financial situation, but it has also provided me with a community of support, great mentors and faculty, and getting to learn about others and relate to others, especially other students here who are also first generation." Message for other first-generation students? "Everything's going to be okay. You don’t have to know everything all at once. You shouldn't let being first generation stop you from doing whatever you want to do. It's something that should be empowering." Who have been your biggest supporters through college? "In addition to my parents, my brother Sebastian is also a big supporter. Being a role model to him has always been an extra push to having that motivation." What's next? "I’m pre-med, so I have always wanted to go into the medical field and help others. I hope to become a physician assistant in pediatrics. In my last post, I mentioned that BYU is going to be an MD school, and I argued that it was a good move. This sparked some important conversation/debate. Here’s another layer that might be even more controversial: BYU and Utah have been long-time rivals. The Mormon vs. non-Mormon (or anti-Mormon), religious vs. secular, state vs. private dichotomies are fascinating, especially because both universities were started by Brigham Young. In the past 10-20 years, it’s taken for granted among BYU undergrads that the U’s medical school does not accept as many BYU students. Mind you, it’s the only public state school and the only one to have the MD degree. I can’t say whether this is mere perception or if there is truth to it, but if perception is reality, then it’s no wonder there is a sense of disillusionment and hopelessness among BYU pre-meds. The only in-state MD option feels out of reach. So, in starting a medical school, BYU did exactly what you would expect a large school would do in the situation. The net result is good: competition breeds excellence. The last point I’ll make—and this one is a bitter pill for me—is that I believe that in 10 years, BYU will leapfrog the U of Utah’s rankings. Why? 1. Look at all their other professional schools (Law, Business). They consistently outperform the U. 2. BYU’s endowment, which is publicly listed as ~$3B, is actually larger than Harvard’s endowment. BYU is sponsored by the LDS church, and BYU’s Board of Trustees are apostles of the church. The LDS church is worth between $200 and $300B, and it will spend whatever it takes to make BYU’s medical school successful.

The future of education should be fundamentally grounded in competency based education ??Thankful to witness expansion of an institution that exemplifies a learning model that allowed me to earn two degrees in less than four years.
