As I reflect on my own time in service this Veterans Day, I’m reminded of the powerful example set by veterans who serve alongside others from every walk of life—different faiths, backgrounds, incomes, and orientations. 12 years ago #veteran #unemployment sat near 10%. 2012 was the turning point — a pivotal year that changed how the private sector viewed #Veterans as a valued talent pool in the workplace. A dozen years ago yesterday our CEO Kevin Schmiegel wrote this OpEd in POLITICO. entitled “Fighting to Hire Veterans.” At the time Hiring Our Heroes was on a crusade to get companies to hire them. And “Military Friendly” was a badge of honor for employers who thought hiring Veterans was the “right thing to do.” 12 years later, the term “fighting to hire veterans” has a whole new meaning and companies not only realize that hiring them is “right for their business” but that being “military friendly” or “ready” simply isn’t good enough anymore. Over the next few weeks we’ll share 12 more stories — call it a “baker’s dozen” — 13 examples of how 2012 led to real change for Veterans in the workplace — and the start of a journey from “military friendly” to #MilitaryThriving.

The skills and experience in teamwork, problem-solving, hard-working, leadership, and adaptability make them an asset. Today, we will pause to honor our US veterans' courage, sacrifice, and dedication to their country. While we thank our Veterans, I ask everyone in HR, Management, and/or Leadership roles to take it a step further… I think about my own time and ask myself, what if I stayed in the military?? I was very fortunate to transition out via the mentorship of great leaders.? They guided me on a successful path and gave me another purpose.? Most are not that fortunate.? We have 17 million living veterans in the United States.? They are 72% more likely to commit suicide than a civilian.? Why? Well, there is a lot of research on it, but from my personal experience, it comes down to mission.? In the military, mission is everything—it’s your purpose. The grit, dedication, teamwork, and camaraderie created through "mission" is unlike any other experience one can have. To go from an organization where your job is mission-driven and underpinned by the ultimate team culture to no job and no mission is beyond depressing. They need a bigger purpose. Why do you want a veteran in your company?? They have thick skin and grit.? They pay attention to detail. They don’t cut corners.? They effectively communicate with their team, even around the most challenging topics.? They will adapt to any adversity.? They will obsess about your mission.? They get the job done. As I think back, the attached picture is the ultimate depiction of why hire a veteran.? This is my office and bedroom in Afghanistan.? I slept on a cot, had a built-in server I couldn’t shut down (it got hot), and had no AC or heat, but I had lots of coffee.? I got 2-3 hours of sleep and obsessed over GREEN on BLUE incidents.? It sucked, but I loved it and still miss it.? Imagine having an employee that is willing to embrace that suck but loves it.? That’s who you want on your team when it's time to act or when it gets hard.? And it will. Thanks to all those that served.? Now, let’s help hire them.??
