The right group of hunters will be just as interested in improving your land’s habitat and wildlife populations as you are. If you will allow them to, many hunters will want to help improve your property’s ability to house more game like deer, turkey, and small game. Earlier this year, we saw continued progress for Yellowstone wolves in Montana with incremental, yet critically important changes to state policies. Wolf conservation is still undoubtedly riddled with challenges. Recent reports indicate five wolves were killed in Wolf Management Unit 313 just north of Yellowstone, despite this season’s three-wolf quota. GYC and our partners advocated for and secured a solution that we hoped would prevent this level of pack disruption, and unfortunately that was not the case. While splitting the area north of Yellowstone into two WMUs and implementing a quota of three wolves in each unit did not work as well as hoped, it was still an important step in the right direction for wolf management in Montana. GYC is committed to building consensus for durable solutions that protect Yellowstone wolves.?In the coming months, we will identify additional long-term strategies for protecting Yellowstone National Park wolf packs during the Montana wolf hunting and trapping season.?

An overlooked area for deer hunters to hunt is fallow fields or wet areas that are grown-up with tall weeds and bushes that are tall enough to hide deer. Much of these lands were once farm fields that are now Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land that provides 27 million acres of wildlife habitat to be raised as fallow fields instead of being farmed by America’s farmers. The hey-day of CRP acreage was between 1985 to 2014, when there were 37 million acres enrolled in the CRP program. 10 million more acres than we have today. And this habitat benefits not only deer, but upland game birds, songbirds, butterflies, endangered species, and pretty much every other sort of wildlife out there.
