Did you know that Children’s hospices rely on grants and charitable donations to provide vital services to children and their families - from play to medical care, to respite care and advocacy? Without services such as these provided to my family and our daughter, I don’t know how we would have coped during her short life. Community NHS support is a postcode lottery with long waiting lists, so the closure of a children’s hospice should worry everyone - even if you’re fortunate enough to never need one. What can you do? ? Support your local hospice by taking part in fundraisers, volunteering or donating. £40 provides an hour of nursing care ? Follow and support charities like Together for Short Lives, which further supports families of children with life-limiting conditions (for example, we were gifted a mini break to make memories and received the Butterfly Fund to assist with funeral costs) ? Write to your MP and sign petitions to ensure vital services aren’t lost and vulnerable children can live their lives with dignity and care.
Zoe's Place Baby Hospice, Liverpool 's decision to close at the end of 2024 is very difficult for the children and families who receive care from the hospice, the staff who tirelessly provide it and all those in the local community who support it. We know that this will have been a very challenging decision for Zoe’s Place’s trustees to make too. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time. Together for Short Lives commits to working with professionals and services in Merseyside to help make sure that the children and families affected by this decision can access the palliative care they need, when and where they need it. Did you know that we receive just one third of our funding from the NHS? This means we must raise at least £5million each year to maintain our services at their current level. As MPs come together to debate Hospice funding today, our Chief Executive, Karen Clarke, spoke to BBC Radio Sussex about the uncertainty of NHS funding, the impact this has on the hospice sector and potential repercussions on services within our local community. Listen to the segment here from the 2hrs 9mins point: https://orlo.uk/ni0vy What do you think about the funding gap for hospice care? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. #Hospice #Hastings #Rother #PalliativeCare #HospiceFunding #NHS

Hospice in the African American Community ..... Culture is often a factor to non-acceptance of Hospice. Taking care of family members is a way to express respect, gratitude and dignity. Family members are trusted to make the best end of life care decisions because they know their loved one best. Food is a love language. It shows that we care. Everything is centered around nourishment and togetherness. It is hard to hear someone say they don’t want to eat or it is ok if they don’t eat. Food is spiritual as well as physical. Spirituality is a very big part of the African American culture. Prayers for a miracle rather than accepting death and focusing on end of life care is often looked down upon because their loved one is giving up. There is so much distrust among the healthcare system. Often times due to the Elders, who have experienced racism and discrimination, those “feelings” are often passed down through the generations. Many of the Elders refer to the Tuskegee Experiment as to why healthcare professionals cannot be trusted. As I have heard someone say before, “I won’t be anyones guinea pig”. Healthcare has been broken in so many aspects. It has been shown that sometimes it is simply that African Americans do not have the information needed or do not understand the information given about Hospice Care such as “What is Hospice”, “Where services can be provided”, “What will Hospice cost me” and “the quality of having Hospice services”. We embrace the sense of community and family. When approaching the topic of hospice, emphasize hospice focus on family and meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of both the patient and the family. Reaching out to African American Community Leaders such as Church Pastors, local city leaders, educators, Drs. to help reinforce a positive Hospice message and to show that Hospice is not something to fear. It is an extension of care and an earned benefit. Most of all, trust is the stepping stone to build positive community relations in order to provide Hospice care to those who might not otherwise use it but deserve its benefits. #hospicecare #bipoccommunity #informed #cna Grateful that I have been invited to speak at community churches about this subject. How many more hospices are going to have to make cuts to services, before the government acts? Anyone going to take a guess? ? It was so sad to hear yesterday that St Catherine's Hospice Sussex and Surrey becomes the sixth hospice in the last couple of months to make cuts to services. ? St Catherine’s was my local hospice growing up in Crawley, and it is much loved for its outstanding specialised and personalised care. As an eight year old boy, I even remember fundraising for it, raising the grand total of £6.10! ? Because it's not as if hospices and their local community don’t do their bit - Hospices rely on fundraising, as on average, only a 1/3 of their income comes from government. Which other intrinsic part of the health system is funded like this, with so little public funding? ? And government is failing to even keep up with this?-?increases to hospice funding are trifling. While government agrees to a NHS pay increase 5.5% this year (which sets the market for nurses' salaries), it is not doing the same for hospice funding. ? On top of that, any hope of additional funding, because hospices are caring for more patients, because of our ageing population, appears to be a pipe dream. ? The amount of public funding for hospices and the system of how it’s calculated is broken. It needs fixing urgently. ? And the frustrating thing is, it’s so short-sighted. These cuts will result in more NHS costs, as more people have to go to hospital (with less end of life care specialism). ? This is when end of life care in the UK has been ranked as the best in the world, largely due to its hospice sector - something we've got right in the health sector. ? Dame Cicely Saunders set up the world’s first modern hospice at St Christopher's in 1967. She was frustrated by a health system that focussed only on the “curable” rather than the dying. It appears we are in danger of making the same mistake now. ? What does this say about our society if we don’t look after the dying and those close to them?
More bad news this morning, as St Catherine's Hospice Sussex and Surrey becomes the sixth UK hospice to announce major cuts in funding and care service job losses over recent weeks. Low local NHS funding means that the hospice has not been able to grow its income in line with its rising cost case. Everyone at Hospice UK sends their solidarity to those affected https://lnkd.in/eWF5u-QA

Yesterday's Backbench debate in Parliament on hospice funding sadly was postponed, but tomorrow I will meet Treasury and Department of Health officials about Government funding of children's hospices. If you want hospice care funded better, please comment & share. Adult #hospices get on average one third of their funds from Govt., children's hospices one fifth. By a quirk of fate in the devolved system, Julia's House gets 8%. In a cost of living crisis, none of this is enough of a safety net for services that prop up the NHS, keeping patients out of hospital and keeping family carers well. Most hospices now face substantial budget deficits. Something has to give. The Welsh Govt has just given an extra £4m to support its hospices. The Scottish Govt funds half of children's hospices' care costs. In England it's a messy, patch-and-mend, postcode lottery of funding. Three parents of children in our care will come with me to the meeting, such is their desire to help change things. Tell us your thoughts. When children take their first breath their care is fully funded, so why isn't it when they take their last? ?? Navigating public relations in hospice work poses unique challenges. How do we effectively communicate key messages when discussions about death are often avoided? ?? That being said, it's vital to have these discussions with loved ones and medical professionals to ensure your end-of-life preferences are honored. ?? Take inspiration from former President Carter's journey; it not only gets us talking about hospice, but also illustrates the essence of quality hospice care, enabling people to live fully until their last moments.
Today, Jimmy Carter reaches one year living with hospice care. NHPCO Interim CEO, Ben Marcantonio has shared a blog about what President Carter and his family are teaching us: “President Carter is showing us an amazing example of what it means to live out the end of one’s life in a way that is in keeping with the entirety of one’s life, and to experience life to the fullest, even as you prepare to die.” Read more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/e4uAVM2J #hospice #HAPC #HAPM #CandlesforCarter?
