One of the Strategic Pillars from the Transforming Tomorrow Together Regional Planning is "Building future-oriented regional community infrastructure". Projects like these are necessary as these investments into community amenities improve quality of life and drive the population growth our region needs to continue competing and expanding in the future. https://lnkd.in/geDfzBmU

I asked the team what this message meant to them, and the biggest takeaway was the deep faith we have in each other and the hope we carry, especially in these early weeks of the new government. It’s a reminder that we’re not alone and that we stand for what we believe in. Community is power. It’s resistance— its people coming together, supporting one another, and standing strong against challenges or injustice. When we unite, share resources, and amplify each other’s voices, we become a powerful force capable of pushing back against oppression, isolation, and adversity. In that unity, there’s strength, hope, and the potential to create meaningful change. Community is Resistance.
City Surf Project will continue to work to provide a safe and welcome space for everyone. No matter how you identify, where you are from, or who you are. We celebrate you, we honor you, we are here for you. We look forward to leaning into our community and celebrating everyone these next few years.

Great to be at the fab Eden building in Salford for today’s @WalkRideGM event. Including gorgeous blue skies in Salford for mini walking and cycling safaris. Really interesting discussions around effective campaigning, framing, community engagement, uniting the movement and growing positive energy to create the conditions for change. ?? I joined a panel to share tips on engaging with Councillors and other politicians. Top tips were basically remember politicans are also human beings, ask what matters most to them, be curious, ask what gets in the way of progress and how to help. Shout about the good stuff as well as the bad. Persist.

Active Thames held an event (10 December) to bring partners together to discuss social value and the impact it has in the sports sector. To date, #ActiveThames, the partnership programme led by the PLA that promotes the development of watersports on the tidal Thames and inland waterways in London, Kent and Essex, has supported 56 community and sports groups with £430,000 of funding. It is focused on improving access, diversity, and inclusion, while raising awareness of the benefits of physical activity in blue spaces. Speakers included Will Watt, Founder/Director of State of Life, a social enterprise that helps organisations measure and value their wellbeing impacts; Sian Palmer-Ferry, Community Development Manager at Canal and River Trust;, Jamie Langstone, Sector and Partnership Manager at Southend’s Council for Voluntary Services (SAVS); and Terri Calbraith, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Poplar HARCA, a resident-led organisation that invests in community projects. Participants at the event gave very positive feedback, reporting that they would be able to apply the learnings and insights in their own work. As we head into peak summer, you might find yourself relying on community institutions even more than usual, especially if you have kids. Pools, parks, and playgrounds are summer essentials. In this piece from our archive, economist Erik Angner shares the story of the swim club in Sweden where he learned the front crawl and backstroke. The broader idea Angner explores is the value of these community institutions and the Nobel Prize-winning economist who helped us understand them. That economist, Elinor Ostrom, spent years researching the successes and failures of community institutions. Which factors led to success? Which led to failure? Ostrom identified eight principles that help diverse groups come together to successfully manage their communities. Her work, and Angner’s piece, are a good reminder that even though division can seem like it’s growing, we know what leads to cohesion in our communities. And, as Ostrom documented so well, many communities are putting those principles into practice everyday.

What is Your Carrot? My kiddo keeps creating the gold photo moments – Jordan and her horse/dog (my term) Fancy this weekend. It’s a simple yet powerful image that speaks to motivation and the pursuit of goals. But what about us? What drives you forward each day? ?? Is it a dream job? ?? A personal milestone? ?? The desire to make a difference? ?? Something else entirely? We all have our "carrots"—those unique motivators that keep us striving for more. For me, it's about building innovative projects that benefit both the community and my family’s legacy. My focus is on commercial development within about 10 miles from my home (not hyper-focused at all). Here's why I love what I do (my carrot): ?? Community Involvement: Being actively engaged in my community and contributing to its growth and prosperity. ?? Collaborative Efforts: Working with experts in various fields is incredibly rewarding. The support network we build together is invaluable. ?? Transforming Visions into Reality: Seeing a project evolve from concept to reality is challenging, but extremely rewarding. Commercial development isn't just about constructing buildings; it's about building a future for my family and my community. I’d love to hear from you! What is your carrot? What keeps you motivated and moving forward? Share in the comments below!

The Camp Research Revolution: Transforming Youth Development ????? Ever wonder why "camp magic" is so hard to explain???? Traditional approaches to understanding camp's impact often relied on anecdotes and vague notions of "magic." This left us struggling to articulate camp's true value to skeptics and decision-makers. (*If you have ever seen me present or you are a long-time CampHacker listener, you know how much I _dislike_ the term Camp Magic.??) Our "aha" moment:?Camp researchers realized years ago that we needed concrete evidence to support our claims and guide our program improvements. Here's how innovative camp research is changing the game: - Action Research:?Involving camp staff and participants in the research process - Longitudinal Studies:?Tracking camper outcomes over multiple years - Creative Methods:?Using art and mapping to capture campers' perspectives - Ecosystem Approach:?Examining camp's role within a broader developmental context Results: - Increased legitimacy for the camp industry - Evidence-based program improvements - Better articulation of camp's value to parents scared of the "risk" of sending their kids to summer camp Potential applications: 1?? Informing youth development policies (at camp and in the larger world) 2?? Enhancing school-camp partnerships (we have the research to show your Superintendant hesitant to give permission to bring your class) 3?? Improving staff training and retention strategies ?? Reflection:?Creative problem-solving in camp research has validated our work and opened new avenues for growth and innovation in our very important youth development work. https://lnkd.in/gPamsQ8s Thank you to my The Pudding Podcast partner Mandi Baker,?Laurie Browne ,?Jacob Sorenson,?and?Victoria Povilaitis, PhD, for talking to us about the state of camp research. We're so excited to start to release our Season 2 episodes soon! Cheers to the American Camp Association, Illinois and Camptivities for continuing to make this show possible! #CampResearch #YouthDevelopment #InnovativeApproaches #BecauseofCamp #ThanksToCamp #CampPros
