ALIA 2024 Conference Thanks to the organisers of the ALI conference for putting together an inspiring program.’ Key takeaways for me from day one (thank you Guinevere for taking this approach to the World Safety Congress and inspiring me to do this): ·??????Shelley Ware: a brilliant opening speaker who took us through her personal journey as an Aboriginal woman working in many diverse fields including schools, media and writing. Her comment about the need to be sincere, listen to Aboriginal voices and take actions resonated with me. Don’t start consultation with a commitment to take steps based on that process. Understand the personal effect of the history of Australia that has affected Aboriginal people and be aware of multi generational impact and trauma. Be brave – take on opportunities and understand and accept different views and ways of knowledge. Her unpacking of the cultural continuum and the 8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning was terrific. ·??????Open publishing/OERs. Open takes many paths and needs to be led from pedagogy rather than technical publishing and library processes. Many great achievements and a diversity of approaches that should be embraced. The pedagogy of open learning is?a fascinating area. ·??????Authors/publishers/libraries. A great panel unpacked opportunities under the government policy Revive and the challenges for authors to reach their community through libraries using a diverse range of initiatives. We all look forward to the government new programs and policy initiatives. ·??????Vendors. Terrific to see our suppliers in the exhibition hall. I’d like to acknowledge Gale and Bezi Publishing Services (on behalf of NewsBank) for the great work they do in making resources available. Gale has made invisible special collections available through terrific packages in recent years in a way that has revolutionised research and study in universities. CNKI and CSIRO Publishing also are very important for research.

Third year dissertations seem a long way off if you have just finished your second year and are exhausted. Take a good break to refresh, and of course concentrate on any work experience or jobs for money you have planned. Don't forget, however, to take a peek at your dissertation plans. It is common to leave these until the term in which they are due, and everyone usually manages to hand in something. However, if you are hoping maybe to start a Masters or other further degree, immediately or some time in future, the mark for your extended essays or dissertation will be important in gaining a place but also in gaining very scarce funding. So, how can you make the dissertation work for you? For the summer, get your ideas in order, plan the structure, and aim to do as much of the primary research as you can. This latter takes more time than you imagine, and will be the focus of your essay, so it is worth having it mostly done before term starts in autumn. Make sure that any primary sources you need are available and will be for the next year. This means checking if libraries and museums have planned closures for maintenance or for setting up major exhibitions, if that travel grant will cover a second visit, and so on. Enjoy the summer (if we have any sun at all!).

Happy to share that the last paper of my PhD has been recently published. In this study we explore how graphic compositions on LMS-interfaces put forth specific ideas of pedagogical and organisational practice and how these can be critically reflected as part of a co-design process. ?? https://lnkd.in/dXe-senn
