I recently visited a local food bank. It is a food bank that picks up produce at a local grocery store. They used to pickup meats near expiration too. They have freezers and as an under-supplied, overburdened food bank, the need is definitely present. In the last six months the same grocery store stopped discounting meats to 50% and started only discounting them to 30%. I know for a fact this has led to greater discard of expired meat. They no longer allow the food bank to pick up near expiration meats. People who wouldn’t be able to afford those foods in the first place, imaginary profits and losses that never existed are their “reasoning” for throwing food away instead. People in need are not the enemy. People in need aren’t hoarding their money greedily and eagerly waiting at the donation doors. The (potential) merger of Albertsons and Fred Meyer terrifies me. They’re already coordinating their sales to justify “see we’re competing with each other and will keep doing so if you let us merge” What all shoppers have realized? Their prices were heavily inflated since first word of this merger to allow “sales” that don’t lose them a penny. Grocery prices are already unattainable for many and only worsening.

Vote “No” on Question 5 in Massachusetts this November. Tip Minimum increase from $15 to $20 will increase the Menu Costs or “Service” fees at your favorite local restaurants, especially smaller restaurant groups. Most Hospitality Workers would go elsewhere if they were looking for a stable bi-weekly paycheck. By increasing the tip minimum to $20, tips will decrease and the industry will lose our most talented individuals. Most Servers land somewhere between $25-$40 with the most competent exceeding that range; the system benefits owner/operators and employees alike. Increasing Tip Minimums hurt the Consumer via increased prices and the Worker by consequently impacting the Earning Potential. Making uninformed decisions hurts people, ask a Server if they would rather make $20 or $45 an hour; you would be outraged if your livelihood was at risk. The California Government can do whatever it wants, leave Massachusetts restaurants alone.

As we're in the midst of fall fundraising season, I thought it might be a good idea to revisit a common misconception: More alcohol leads to better fundraising results. Spoiler alert. It's not alcohol that leads to better fundraising results, it's a strong connection to the mission of the organization. The decision to serve alcohol—and how much—ultimately rests with the hosting organization. While alcoholic beverages are typical at many fundraisers, I've seen several alcohol-free events achieve remarkable fundraising success. If you do choose to serve alcohol, one crucial consideration stands out: please offer thoughtful non-alcoholic alternatives that go beyond just soda water with lime. By providing a diverse selection of non alcoholic beverage options, you are showing consideration for all attendees' needs and preferences. This shows respect for your guests and helps create a more inclusive environment that everyone can appreciate.

As a parent, you always hope to see your children grow into individuals who make a positive difference. Seeing Arden recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the San Diego Business Journal Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards is, of course, a proud moment. But what’s even more fulfilling is watching the impact of his nonprofit, Sports4Kids-CA, unfold. For two years, he’s worked tirelessly to bring sports opportunities to kids who might not otherwise have access. ??? Just yesterday, I stopped by one of his sessions at a local elementary school. Watching 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders—whom don’t have regular PE classes in their schools—get their only physical activity for the week was both heartwarming and eye-opening. It’s easy to overlook how something as simple as a weekly soccer or basketball session can make a difference, but the science backs it up. ?? According to a study published (https://lnkd.in/g2FymJ3H ) in PLOS ONE (with over 11,000 children aged 9-13), participation in team sports leads to: ?? 10% lower anxiety and depression scores ?? 19% lower withdrawal and depression scores ?? 17% lower social problems ?? 12% fewer attention problems ?? 20% fewer instances of rule-breaking behavior In a world where mental health challenges are rising at an alarming rate, especially among youth, providing access to sports may seem like a small thing. But over time, these small, consistent efforts can change lives—physically, mentally, and emotionally. ?? What might start as just a game can evolve into something much more: a foundation for resilience, confidence, and long-term well-being. When you consider the percentages from the study—those 10%, 20% reductions in mental health challenges—applied across schools, communities, and generations, the potential impact is enormous. These small actions, when repeated over time, can accumulate and create lifelong benefits for children and, ultimately, healthier, stronger communities. ?? KFC Foundation: Kentucky Fried Wishes GRANTS FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Application deadline: May 1 to May 31, 2024 for the upcoming application window (“cycle”), focused on health and well-being. Grant amount: Up to $10,000 Description: Through the Kentucky Fried Wishes program, the KFC Foundation will award up to $1 million total to 100 nonprofit organizations annually in the United States and Puerto Rico. 25 grants will be awarded per quarterly cycle. The next quarterly cycle for 2024 focuses on improving health and well-being, including efforts such as mobile health clinic creation, playground improvements, domestic violence shelter upgrades, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities; Eligible nonprofit organizations must operate on the local level (or be an affiliate or chapter of a larger organization that operates locally) and directly benefit their surrounding community. Puerto Rico-based nonprofits with 501(c)(3) who meet other eligibility requirements can apply.
