Securing government benefits while protecting against identity fraud is a critical challenge, especially post-pandemic. With $135 billion in fraudulent claims from unemployment insurance alone, agencies need more robust identity-proofing tools. Digital IDs, such as mobile driver's licenses (mDLs), could be a game changer. mDLs offer a standardized, secure way to verify identities, helping agencies ensure that benefits reach the right people. Combined with biometrics and AI, these solutions reduce fraud while enhancing accessibility and privacy. This initiative would not only help secure online identities but also provide a new revenue stream for USPS, supporting its financial stability. By combining in-person verification with digital credentials, this approach could combat fraud and disinformation effectively to allow USPS to lead the way in digital trust. We're excited to share that SpruceID is participating in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) Accelerate Adoption of Digital Identities on Mobile Devices Consortium. This initiative will help define and facilitate a reference architecture for digital credentials that protect privacy, are implemented securely, enable equity, and are widely adoptable and easy to use.
