I think a lot about the role of hope to help power change. Hope not as an act of faith. Hope combined with action. Hope as a resilience strategy. Because as David Suzuki puts it “Despair is a luxury we can’t afford any longer.” My reserves of hope have just been replenished. I had the privilege of being on the judging panel for the Hatch: Taronga Accelerator Program and see how 6 brilliant founders evolved their offerings to help tackle some of the world’s most urgent environmental problems. They have been on a 14 week journey together supported by the Taronga programme team and Impact Boom, that will no doubt shape their future, and I’m excited to see how this next Hatch cohort progress. Congratulations to The Groundswell Collective - Tiny Forests rapidly rewilding urban spaces - for being the overall winner Medical Pantry - ensuring unused medical supplies are diverted from landfill & get to the animal carers who need them - for the People’s Choice award All the participants - Woop Woop for Nature ZeroTag Pledge for the Planet & Circular PV Alliance for making it in to the program, showing inspiring levels of commitment and ambition and presenting compelling pitches Thank you to my fellow judges Alexandra Holcomb John Preston Lucinda (Lucy) Hughes Turnbull AO (Lucy), panel moderator and Taronga CEO Cameron Kerr AO and Christie Gazal for pulling it all together Register your interest for the next Hatch accelerator https://lnkd.in/gKAfDdr #hope #environment #change #resilience #startups #accelerator #climateaction #climatecrisis #transformation #thegreattransformation #biodiversity #conservation #naturepositive #naturerepairmarket #theanthropocene #thesymbiocene

I came across this throwback from 2020 when 70% of my time was spent hanging out with wildlife. Back then, I led the conservation and wildlife efforts at a luxury tented camp on the Kenyan coast. My favourite moments were the evening strolls with the giraffes. I couldn't help but reflect on how in nature, smaller animals tend to eat more relative to their body weight, while larger animals eat less. Yet, it's the smaller creatures that burn through more energy. It’s a delicate balance that also exists in business. Small startups are like those smaller animals—requiring more effort and resources for every result. Every decision, every dollar carries more weight. Meanwhile, larger companies, much like these giraffes, can operate on scale, with bigger returns and fewer margins of error. What fascinates me most is how, despite their size, giraffes are such gentle creatures—just like many senior executives who, from a distance, might seem intimidating but turn out to be approachable and down-to-earth once you get to know them. And let’s be real, we all envy those giraffe eyelashes! ?? #WildlifeReflections #StartupLife #GiraffeWisdom #Sustainability #Climate #SustainableShambasKE

After nearly Seven years at Anthesis, today is my last (contracted) day. Having taken the difficult decision to leave the business last year, I was immediately placed on gardening leave and so have been spending time with good books and fine company over the last 3 months. My time at Anthesis has been something of a wild ride - mostly thrilling, occasionally frustrating but never dull! I'm very grateful for the opportunity to grow a Practice of nearly 50 (incredibly talented) people, first in the UK and then across Europe and all the fantastic learning that has brought. Working within a high-growth environment that encourages entrepreneurship allowed me to shape a team and a community that was both representative of the company values and my own *ahem* idiosyncrasies. A special mention to my team, who - to my mind - delivered more defined impact than any other. This wasn't enabling or facilitating or some other intangible intervention, we worked on capital projects that reduced carbon in our atmosphere and gave confidence to investment in technologies and infrastructure previously seen as risky or on the edge of commercial readiness. Together we identified over £500m investment in low carbon infrastructure, installed the world's first hybrid PV-thermal system, designed the UK's first multi-MW industrial heat pump, supported planning on the most sustainable leisure resort in Europe, delivered in excess of £1bn CAPEX in energy efficiency and LZC generation...... like an Oscar's speech the list could go on and on .. These are all wonderful achievements that we should be immensely proud of! Given life up to the age of 18 or 22 is split into 4-6 year learning blocks, maybe subconsciously one agitates for some change aligned to these periods in adult life. As one investment cycle closed and a new one opened back in August 2023, I think for me this did become a point to reflect and question what I wanted to do next. Maybe somewhat paradoxically, given my sentiment on the ever evolving challenges and rewards of working at Anthesis, that's why for me it was time to try something new. I will always be grateful for the opportunity afforded to me and the great people I met and collaborated with along the way.

Tomorrow! Join Seaworthy Collective for the return of the Sea Change Makers Panel Series! Join us at 6pm on April 3rd at Glassbox Ironside for the relaunch of The Sea Change Makers Series - featuring panels of founders Seaworthy Collective has supported in its startup programs! Our first panel of 2024 will focus on Catalyzing Coastal Resilience, a conversation encompassing solutions addressing storm surge, sea level rise, beach erosion, coastal blue finance, and more. More panels will be announced soon for April and May leading up to our startup showcase! This panel will feature 3 Seaworthy founders and startups (AKA Sea Change Makers): ?? Alex Berkowitz, is the founder and CEO of?Coastal Protection Solutions, which specializes in patent-pending easily deployable systems that mitigate coastal flooding and protect communities against the threat of climate change. Their main patent-pending invention is a system called the Wavebreaker? which acts as a wave "speedbump" to decrease the height and velocity of waves mitigating the damage to life and property in coastal communities from a major storm. ?? Anele Bloch (née Makhwaza) is the founder and CEO of?Igugu Global, which focuses on solving a fundamental problem- a gap in climate information available to financiers to allocate capital to more green outcomes by providing a platform that empowers companies to self-assess, manage and disclose climate-related financial risks. This drives more companies to market, accelerating adaptation. ?? Blayne Ross is the co-founder and CEO of?ShoreLock, an innovative beach erosion treatment that aids in maximizing a beach’s capacity to dewater quickly and keep sand in its place. Their revolutionary technology utilizes recycled sargassum?and naturally occurring organic material to stabilize?the beach. This environmentally friendly compound enables the sand to reestablish natural cohesion and allows the beach ecosystem to thrive at its full capacity. Regeneration needs local entrepreneurs! Marketeers! Sales people! Funding finders. Our regenerative magnum opus is now happening in Peloponnese, #Greece. We educate the Greek SME entrepreneurs how not to compete with other restaurants but with home-cooking. Economy of scope! Think Global - Act Local! And eat out more often for reasonable prices because you work together in uniqueness instead of copy copy copy and just serve pizza... Growth economy through diversification and price differentiation. Turning the Threats of SWOT into Mega Opportunities by filling unused potential of what IS. We will implement the paradox of minimalism and abundanism and work with the overspill effect of sea and land. Design 4 Faster Biodiversity. We are now scouting burnt land for our first project here of replanting pocket forests after wildfires. Will work with SUGi Project, permaculture. And of course, we can harvest and grow the local slowfood economy easily! Implementing our first Biorock manmade coral reef of the Med? We would really like to keep the industrial monoculture fish farmers out and keep the small Greek fishermen alive! You are welcome to come and learn ecology economy in a growth economy near the Mediterranean Sea. Bring your groups, your schools, your friends, and stay longer in the off-season. We also have available accommodation in many hotel/studio/apartment sizes and locations for #digitalnomads and #pensioners looking to rent/buy Greek homes to fill the air with (grand)children, joy, and laughter. In the off-season, we supply monthly tariffs to fill unused hotel/apartment spaces. Come, bring your friends, stay longer... Join us for #regeneration. Ecology, economy, sense, and sciences. We ARE nature. Let's BE nature... Let's go for Abundance! #nature #environment #design #shelter #breedingspaces #biodiversity #humandiversity

We're in a time of wicked problems. But how do we navigate change that is so complex, that the elements of consideration can be wicked problems all on their own? Land use change. Yep, I'm going there. Does it give you a visceral reaction too? Do you also picture full farm conversion to a Pinus radiata monoculture in your mind? You're not alone. Chanelle O'Sullivan posed last week that land use diversification is a better term. The term 'land use change' implies the need for large-scale conversion, however the term 'land use diversification' can better encapsulate what is actually needed. Change is focused on difference, however, diversity is focused on addition, variety and exploring the complementary. Do they break down to similar things? Sure, but the connotations of the words are very different, especially in food and fibre when paired with the term 'land use'. As we navigate the continued need for change/diversification that is being influenced by a complex network of factors (that can often compete with each other), how do you think New Zealand needs to approach how we use our land in the future to ensure that food and fibre is a profitable and thriving sector, but also so that environmental, social and cultural factors and outcomes are also prioritised? What would help us to thrive, but conversely, what would prevent us from thriving?

Embracing Regeneration: A New Paradigm for Business At AMARNA Vida, we believe in the transformative power of regeneration. ?? For us, it’s more than just a concept—it’s a guiding principle that shapes our approach to business. Regeneration, to us, is about more than just sustainability; it’s about restoring life in individuals, communities, nature, and the intricate relationships that connect them all. ?? Each interaction, each decision, is an opportunity to cultivate relationships rooted in mutual enrichment and interconnectedness. As Angela Pinhati, Chief Sustainability Officer @Natura, eloquently puts it, “Regeneration is the process of restoring life in individuals, communities, nature, and the relationships between them. It’s about recognising ourselves as part of a larger system and nurturing our own well-being and that of our surroundings.” This concept of regeneration serves as our compass, guiding us in how we conduct ourselves and the businesses that work with us and how we interact with our communities, as well as how we express ourselves in the world. ?? It’s a new cultural software that we are proud to install in every aspect of our organisation and the organisations we work with. Join us on this journey of regeneration as we strive to create a world where people and nature thrive together harmoniously. Together, we can make a difference. ?? #Regeneration #Sustainability #NATURA #Impact #Community Angela Pinhati
