Fun Fact for you as you head into the new week... Do you know where the first CPA exam was held? New York ?? How about when? 1896 ?? New York was the first state to officially license CPAs. Only 3 men passed that first exam—compare that to 67 THOUSAND people this year.?? Now, over 125 years later, the CPA designation remains a gold standard in the accounting world. Several readers have asked me my thoughts on the proposal by AICPA and NASBA to add a bachelor's degree plus two years of experience pathway to CPA licensing. I support the idea, not the proposed implementation of a "structured learning program" for the second year. In addition to being ineffective, it will present another opportunity for cheating. CPAs have been found to cave to the temptation to cheat on ethics exams. If experience counts, just count the hours worked or billed. I'm quoted in Marc Joffe's blog on the topic.
