Learn more: https://bit.ly/FCROBoard Q) How long have you been a Board Member with the FCRO? A) Almost 2 years. Q) What are your personal hobbies? A) Reading, exercise, yoga, volunteering in the community. Q) What is your all time favorite book? A) My favorites change as I experience new books but right now one of my favorites is "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. Q) Tell us about your family, pet(s), or give a fun fact about yourself! A) Married to Stephen Morton, 4 children and 4 grandchildren and 1 dog (Ruba, a Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier). Interesting Fact: Steve and I were Foster/Adoptive parents for our middle child, Mike. We adopted him through the DHHS. Mike has Fragile X syndrome. He is now 29 and is living more independently with a fantastic SLP in Omaha. Q) Why do you feel the FCRO's mission is important? A) As a retired educator I strongly believe that students cannot learn and grow to their full potential unless they feel safe and feel cared about/loved. This philosophy dovetails nicely the mission of FCRO. Our society is only as strong as how we treat our most vulnerable members - which includes children. We can build stronger future families by investing in our children now. Q) What do you consider your greatest accomplishment or what is the most rewarding part of your work? A) I think collaborating with team members to brainstorm creative ideas to help the children involved continue to grow and practical ideas to support our foster families is very rewarding. It is always rewarding when we see families become stronger after working through some challenging issues and trying the ideas we have offered.

At Saint Mary's, we create opportunities for our students, staff, and faculty to give back to the community and exercise wise leadership. I love Baltimore. It’s where my mom was partially raised. It’s where my grandparents lived for 50 years. I grew up going to Orioles games at Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards, visiting Fort McHenry and the aquarium, and eating at what was then a thriving Inner Harbor pavillion. In other words, I experienced the tourism activities. I’m privileged and only knew one part of Baltimore — a common occurrence for anyone who lived in the suburbs of Washington D.C. Like many downtown cities, Baltimore has challenges — declining population that brings lower tax revenue, funding for schools and city services, and gun violence and senseless deaths (although Baltimore’s 2023 homicide rate was its lowest in nearly a decade). Our society’s divide between the haves and have-nots occurs in so many areas of life, including which children can access sports — seemingly one thing that should be easy for all kids to experience. And yet this problem is true in Baltimore. In recent years, Baltimore has made progress to improve sports access for youth. I wrote about some developments here for Aspen Institute Sports & Society. The mayor, rec & parks department, schools, businesses, philanthropy, nonprofits and many others all have played a role to better serve Baltimore kids. There are still challenges in Baltimore, especially funding, facilities and transportation. As we see in many communities, youth sports providers in Baltimore often operate individually and without coordinated efforts to grow access. And yet Baltimore is trying and accomplishing important progress. As we bring the Project Play Summit to Baltimore in three days, that’s worth celebrating. If you’re coming to the Summit, enjoy the networking, food, panel discussions and O’s game. I hope you’ll also take the time to appreciate all of Baltimore and its efforts to improve. It’s a wonderful, complicated city that I’ve enjoyed my whole life, even as I’m still learning about all of its dimensions.

While many Western New Yorkers today are basking in celebration of a Buffalo Bills’ playoff victory (Go Bills!), it would be remiss of any of us to not pause and reflect on another celebration. Yesterday was a day set aside to remember and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who envisioned a profound unity – a nation where health care wouldn't be yet another line of division. However, despite the leadership and advocacy of Dr. King and other leaders of the Civil Rights movement, divisions still exist within our society. We have to look no further than last December, when a blizzard not unlike the one that blanketed our region this past weekend, resulted in more than three dozen deaths, a disproportionate number of whom were Black or elderly. The blizzard highlighted how systemic issues like social isolation and lack of resources disproportionately still impact marginalized communities in Buffalo. Recognizing these disparities fuels our work at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, where we are on the frontlines of closing that gap. ? We're actively tackling the "triple evils" impacting health: poverty, racism, and violence. We strategize against health disparities, fueled by Dr. King's spirit of service and justice. The university’s Community Health Equity Research Institute recently launched its first-ever pilot funding program to address health disparities and adverse social determinants of health. Initiatives like the UB Veggie Van study, the annual Igniting Hope Conference, and the Beyond the Knife lecture series demonstrate a strong commitment to health equity. These programs expand access to care, engage communities, and connect patients to the resources they need. While football unites Buffalo, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned a grander unity. Let us carry Dr. King's torch and advocate for access to quality care for all, fight against discrimination in health care, and treat every patient with the dignity and respect they deserve. #MLKDay #BillsMafia #HealthcareEquity #UBuffalo ?

The Legatus of Raleigh chapter welcomes author and activist Kenny Xu as their guest speaker for the April chapter meeting. Mr. Xu's first book, "An Inconvenient Minority," exposed the harms of race-based admissions programs on a critical minority, Asian-Americans, who often face college admissions departments that prioritize other minorities rather than merit.?Mr. Xu's second book, "School of Woke," explored the ill effects of Critical Race Theory in the public education system. Mr. Xu also successfully joined a lawsuit before the Supreme Court that overturned race-based practices in college admissions. Mr. Xu's two books coupled with his advocacy through the non-profit Color?Us?United have impacted the cultural and educational landscape of America by helping people understand the importance of building a truly colorblind, merit-based society where people are treated as individuals. The EALA New Champions Fund will grant an annual unrestricted competitive sub-grant and year-long mentorship to support leaders of color, or allies of the equity in education movement, who are actively working to support students with disabilities, including students who are marginalized or come from underserved communities and those experiencing poverty. The purpose of this sub-grant is to elevate the profile and provide resources for the growth of the organization/initiative of not-yet-recognized leaders doing exceptional work who may struggle to be recognized in traditional national fundraising and communication efforts. What’s included? Funding: A one-year $35,000 unrestricted sub-grant. Mentorship: A one-year mentorship provided to leadership to accomplish strategic goals. Participation in National Events: EALA will work with the New Champions to spotlight their work through various media channels, podcasts, webinars, and national conferences to highlight the work of the organizations Additionally, EALA will provide two additional $5,000 sub-grants per year to runners-up as determined by the panel of New Champions judges.

Commendable efforts by the CDC Foundation and Voices For Our Fathers Legacy Foundation with the Voices Today for Change Tomorrow scholarship program, recognizing the enduring impact of the Tuskegee experiments on the fabric of Black culture and its relationship with healthcare. These experiments have left a lasting scar, altering the trust dynamics within our communities and shaping perceptions of medical institutions. Not just with those who participated in the experiments, but the community surrounding the individuals as well. While scholarships are a notable first step, the magnitude of the trauma demands a comprehensive and community inclusive approach. Expanding initiatives to include accessible mental health resources, community support networks, and healthcare advocacy is paramount. This is not just about financial aid; it's about addressing the systemic harm inflicted and fostering genuine healing and empowerment. Let's view this scholarship program as a catalyst for broader change and commit to providing robust support to the surviving families. According to Emory University, the recidivism rate for those who attain a bachelor’s degree, is only 5.6% (compared to the average 55% for those who finish some high school). According to the Vera Institute of Justice, incarcerated people who participate in college programs in prison are 48% less likely to recidivate than those who do not.
