Last year, I had the honor of sitting in a room full of some of the greatest thought leaders in the senior living industry at the Think Tank event. I walked in excited, eager to learn and understand new perspectives, knowing that bridging the trust gap requires true collaboration and representation from every corner of our industry. But as the conversations unfolded, I realized something crucial: I was the only nurse representing the voices of direct care workers who bear so much of the responsibility in these communities. It was a moment of clarity—how could we discuss the future of senior living without the insights from those who are on the frontlines every single day? So, I spoke up. I shared with James Lee and Nicole Will, the Think Tank founders, how vital I believed it was for nurses to be present in these discussions. And I was met with incredible openness and ?? agreement. This was always part of their vision, but in that moment, they committed to making sure that nurses from all over the country would be represented in future events. Today, I’m beyond grateful to be part of this Think Tank journey, “Where Head + Heart Leaders Gather”, knowing that nursing voices will now have a seat at the table, not just through me, but through countless others. It reinforces my belief that the voice of the #nurse is the missing piece—the one that could change everything. To all direct care workers, nurses and their teams: ???? Your voice matters. The world is finally waking up to the critical role you play, and you deserve to be heard. ???? Advocate for yourself, speak up, and know that there are people who want to collaborate and help you shine. I’m proud to have played a small role in lighting this path, and I encourage you to do the same. We’re all in this together. ???? How can we centre people in the creation of a health-led economy? One, we need to reframe WHERE health happens ?? Two, we need to give people a REASON to engage?? Three, we need to AMPLIFY lived experience ?? First, a bit more about WHERE… the dynamics of healthcare are set to get a lot more social as we move away from the concept of appointment-led care. We need to take health delivery into the community and reach people where they are, whether at work, rest or play. Next, REASON… Rather than placing undue demands on people,?let’s think creatively about what we can bring that’s enticing and enriching for them. Maybe that’s a new experience, entertainment,?skills and training,?or simply access to respite. And now, AMPLIFY… We need to forge meaningful connections between business, research, the state and citizens. The onus to change shouldn’t simply be on individuals - employers and businesses need to hear about employee experiences in order to understand how to make the workplace thrive. And these stories must be fed back to policymakers to push for systemic change. ?? This is a summary of the talk I gave last week at?the launch?of?the IPPR’s ‘Our Greatest Asset’ report, and it encapsulates the three design principles we put into practice in all our work at The Liminal Space.

?? Celebrating 10 years of helping organisations to treat people as #CitizensNotConsumers??? "The work opened up people’s perspectives to more participatory approaches, gave us some ways of working and insight from members that we wouldn’t have otherwise had. Overall it sets us on a course of where we want to get to, approach we want to take, quicker wins and things to build on." Faye Goldman,?The Q community?Head of Communications? ? New Citizen Project?worked with The Health Foundation’s?Q?community – a community of thousands collaborating to improve the safety and quality of health and care. Together, we wanted?to better understand how its members engaged and then develop a strategy for increasing meaningful #participation. Through desk research, interviews and co-creation sessions, we developed principles for making participation both broader and deeper. ? Once we’d arrived at a set of core principles, we ran “Action Labs” for members and staff to co-develop and test new ideas. Through this work,?Q?has introduced new membership initiatives to support participation,?including collaboratively redesigning their online platforms to better respond to members’ needs and providing?more open spaces for members to share and work through challenges together. ?? This is a time of reset and reconfiguring for third sector leaders. The evidence shows that doing things WITH people, not just for them, is the path to more sustainable organisations and deeper impact. In a collaborative effort by Jacqueline Bassey, Aaron De Smet, Emily Field, Taylor Lauricella and Brooke Weddle from McKinsey Health Institute, {Thriving Workforce} their thoughts about those in the workforce centered on the following, ‘Employees are now more like elite artists or athletes who are inspired to produce at the highest levels but need adequate time to recharge and recover.’ It’s a fascinating way to think about employees and makes perfect sense since maximizing one’s efforts can’t be 24/7/365 behavior. And if we ponder panelists for a moment and see them as the ‘employees’ of panel companies, are they somehow inspired to produce at the highest levels? It would be difficult to argue that is happening on a regular basis. The key is to create an environment where panelists are not only stimulated to give it their best but can even recharge and recover during the task, something we frankly do not see today.
