When interviewed for the first time as new CEO, this is always a great opportunity to set the tone of your tenure as CEO. Yesterday, Norfolk Southern former CFO Mark George was interviewed for the first time as CEO. The good news is that Norfolk Southern clearly deserves congratulations on operational resilience in response to hurricanes, and (obviously) the latest financial results. Two clear misses as newly minted CEO: 1. Employee Safety: Whilst the word "safety" was mentioned almost in passing at the very beginning of the interview, when asked about the East Palestine derailment, there was a great opportunity as new CEO to highlight the importance of a safety culture and that employee safety comes first. In his response, Mr. George focused purely on $150M in insurance recovery and cost...as if this was about cost recovery. 2. On the question of the dismissal of his predecessor Mark Shaw (over inappropriate workplace behavior), there was a great opportunity as the new CEO to set the workplace culture with a zero tolerance for this type of behavior. Instead, it was dismissed as "noise and drama in the past" and "the noise doesn't matter anymore", a bump in the road". Two missed opportunities for a first-time CEO that realizes he is no longer a CFO....

Earlier this week, Founder & Co-CIO, Scott Morrison joined BNN Bloomberg. In this quick discussion, Scott wishes to re-iterate our view that it is important to stay “Balanced” for risk management purposes. As many of you have heard from Scott, he views our three strategies as a “Modern Day Balanced Fund” to help investors stay prudently diversified. All three companies mentioned on the program have been out of favour for separate reasons over the last couple of years since interest rates rose and Covid after shocks occurred in the economy. Scott feels all three companies discussed are well managed and undervalued companies with prospects for improving free cash flow and earnings growth heading into 2025 regardless of who wins the U.S. election this fall.
