This district continues to be full of lies. They will get teachers of color but they CANNOT “retain them.” There is no mention in this article about how many teachers of color left the district, how many educators and administrators of color that have been affected by health issues due to stressful working conditions in this district, and how they plan to “retain the ones” that are currently there. I read nothing about how educators and administrators of color will be protected, nutured, loved and healed. I heard nothing about a plan to make sure educators of color have a sense of belonging. This entire article is a form of tokenization. The weight that this district puts on educators of color to “fix” the “gap”, while being forced to assimilate to whiteness while swallowing themselves, just to survive (not thrive) as an educator in this district is ridiculous. Did the teachers of color get compensation for speaking out on this article? No white teacher was interviewed on how they will support the students of color in their classrooms this year that don’t look like them. Their voices are not a representation of every educator of color in this district. They are speaking to teachers of color that are new to the district. Let's hear from the ones that have been there for some time. The ones who have been silenced and invisibilized. Let’s honor the ones that are no longer there. Interview the white educators and administrators that have seen the struggle for educators of color. Let’s centralize the conversations in this district around “whiteness” and how it has impacted not only education but schooling as well. If any district ever did this, we would be so much farther along. Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure you have to fully understand what the problem is before a REAL solution can occur and this district refuses to do so, as many others do as well. Don’t hire educators of color if you don’t see and hear the ones that are currently in this district. Don’t hire educators of color if you can not protect them against systemic racism. Tell the truth, let them know what they’re up against and the lack of support they will receive. Tokenization at its best. CCSD don’t capitalize this as a win. This is history repeating itself. The opportunity lies in designing and maintaining systems that serve people across their entire lifespan—from prenatal care and early childhood education through ongoing skill development in adulthood, and even learning opportunities in later stages of life. Let’s talk about: Early Learning and K-12 Education: Investing in high-quality early childhood education, universal preschool, and expanding family engagement to ensure children start school ready to succeed. Community Colleges and Higher Education: Leveraging the California Community Colleges and the UC/CSU systems to create flexible, accessible programs that cater to lifelong learners, especially for those who need to reskill or upskill. Workforce Development: Partnering with industries to create apprenticeships, internships, and continuous education programs that allow workers to adapt to new technologies and job markets. Civic and Community Engagement: Expanding community-based learning that encourages civic participation and engagement throughout one’s life. Aging and Continuing Education: Creating policies and programs that support education for aging populations, ensuring access to technology and community resources for older adults to continue learning and contributing. Let’s learn from what other states and counties are doing and start working on this now in benefit of our future! I am thrilled to share, below, the three pillars of my candidate statement for the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board. While the two-year seat is uncontested, I believe it is essential to be transparent about my goals and vision for our school district. Therefore, I am eager to present my statement to the community. I have also included, at the bottom of this post, a link to the Coconino County website where you can read my full candidate statement and the candidate statements for individuals running for the three, four-year seats. Local elections significantly influence our daily lives through decisions on education, public safety, and community services, so make sure to be prepared and know who you support! My platform is built on three pillars: educational excellence, community engagement, and equitable achievement. 1.????????Educational Excellence: Fostering a culture of continuous improvement within our schools that emphasizes the development of critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning skills is central.?To achieve this, FUSD must focus on supporting professional development for teachers, promoting innovative teaching methods and ensuring our curriculum prepares students for challenges they will face in the future.?This, alongside valuing diversity and promoting equity amongst individuals, will prepare FUSD students to be responsible, informed and engaged members of society. ? 2.????????Community Engagement: Parents play a crucial role in their children's education, and I am dedicated to fostering open communication and collaboration between schools and families. I will work to strengthen partnerships between schools, families, and local organizations to promote broader and more open discourse which will build a supportive and inclusive environment for all students based in respect and focused on student development. I will prioritize transparency in decision-making and actively seek input from all stakeholders, ensuring that the voices of our community are reflected in the policies we implement. 3.????????Equitable Achievement: I will aim to foster an inclusive environment that values diversity and provides equal opportunity.?With a focus on implementing culturally responsive and relevant teaching practices and providing resources that are tailored to support the diverse needs of students, FUSD can ensure that all students have access to a high-quality education.?To do this, I will advocate for responsible budgeting practices that prioritize classroom needs and student outcomes across all schools. By optimizing resource allocation we can provide our students with the best possible educational experiences while maintaining fiscal sustainability. The Education Trust Midwest’s latest report sheds light on critical challenges in Michigan’s education system. Nearly half of all students of color, and two-thirds of Black students, attend schools with high concentrations of poverty. These students are less likely to have experienced and effective teachers, which are crucial for student success. At Teach For America Detroit, we are committed to addressing these disparities by ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has access to excellent educators.
