It was so much fun to visit Charlene Zietsma's "Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Sustainability" class today. I chatted with the students about my experiences as a #sustainability "intrapreneur" (I love this term!) at two large but very different companies: Boston Consulting Group (BCG) (where I helped start the #GreenTeam) and DTE Energy. I shared 3?? best practices that I believe help individuals and organizations innovate for sustainability: ?? A senior-level executive champion: a mentor and someone on your side who really knows how to navigate the organization ?? Rock-solid analysis: there's no getting around this one. Ask your critics to poke holes in your work, and it'll be stronger for it. Sustainability work is rife with uncertainties; use scenario analysis to demonstrate the range of possibilities ?? Trusted insider noisemakers: these folks are essential complements to outside agitators. Trust is earned. Those who have it, must use it and make noise for the cause! Would love to hear about others' sustainability #intrapreneurship experiences! What worked or didn't? Your advice for students?

Guess what generates the biggest social & environmental impact? A sustainable business model It might seem contrary to popular belief but if you want to create a long-lasting impact on solving today’s social and environmental problems then forget about starting an NGO or entering into politics because these systems are as good as the leadership then. This fundamental model makes the whole process no different than an open loop system where there has to be a constant conscious effort to keep track of the efforts and value creation. I have nothing against these organizations and systems as many of them have brought immense impact and improved countless lives but there is a lot more friction in executing that model. Whereas a “Business” is a value-creation flywheel. ?? Think about it- If your product/service is resulting in better practices & efficiencies in the processes that are in the interest of the planet. If you’re able to make it sustainable thereby bringing value to people who are building such products then the impact is far more rewarding and self-driving even if the leadership changes- A closed-loop system. ? This DOES NOT, by any means, imply that you need to prioritize purpose over profit. After all, we need to maximize shareholder value, that is the whole crux of a business org. It’s just about which process you choose to profit from and which behavior do we reward. And yes, of course, it’s darn difficult to do so. Nonetheless, still the best way for you to solve the problem in the long term. Sharing more resources in the comment if you’d like to dig deeper. GO BUILD SOMETHING AWESOME!

As a professional with social entrepreneurship roots, a background in academia, and corporate and policy experience, I have developed a unique perspective on sustainability that goes far beyond just theory. Here's what sets our approach apart: Our #CollectiveSustainability approach focuses on collaboration, inclusivity, and the interconnectedness of action. The sustainability challenges we face—like climate change, resource depletion, and inequality—are far too complex for any one to solve alone. We need to be pooling ressources, experiences, knowledge, and influence, collectively leveraging the power of group dynamics to create systemic, far-reaching impact that is unattainable through individual efforts. Sustainability isn't just about following established norms, reporting and compliance-- it's also about pushing boundaries by combining cutting-edge technology with social innovation to create new solutions. My goal is to inspire and empower others to become Changemakers in their own organizations, whether it is in government, academia, or industry. A good friend once called me "Cheerleader for Sustainability", a title I wear proudly. If you work for clients ranging from Lufthansa Group, Mast-J?germeister SE to the OECD - OCDE and European Commission you just don’t always have the solutions. But by bridging the Gap between theory and practice and bringing people together from various fields you can facilitate measurable impact that drives real change. "Many small people who in many small places do many small things can alter the face of the world" Let's work together to create positive change! #CollectiveSustainability #SustainableDevelopment #Leadership #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalImpact #GreenTech
