?? Reflections on Internship Accessibility in the Music Business Sector ?? As someone who's been through the internship search in the music business industry, I've noticed a concerning trend that I'd like to share with you all. It's disheartening to see that most internships require at least one year of experience, making it seem like an insurmountable barrier for first-year students eager to start their careers. Even when opportunities don't demand prior experience, responses to applications are often few and far between. Silence or ignoring messages and emails can be demoralizing for those trying to break into the industry. As a community, I believe we need to do better. Companies should demonstrate more empathy and consideration towards applicants, particularly those attempting to make their first step in the music world. Open and respectful communication can make a significant difference in the applicants' experience and the company's image. I hope that by sharing my thoughts, we can contribute to a positive change in how companies approach the internship selection process, making it more inclusive and accessible to all those passionate and eager to work in the music sector. Let's work towards giving everyone, regardless of their experience level, a fair chance to pursue their dreams in this vibrant industry. ????

?????????? ????????'?? ???????????? ??????????????????: Kaitlyn Barnett? Kaitlyn is TREND's Music Publicity Intern, who has been here for the last couple of months. Her positive energy enhances our team, and we are incredibly proud to have her with us! ?? ??????????? ???????????? ???????? ?????? ???????????? ???????? ???????? ?????????????? ???????????????????? ???? ??????????? : I have learned the ins and outs of being a publicist for different clients, starting from researching different outlets, to securing an article on behalf of a client in the press. I have also learned how to network and make connections in the music industry. I also feel like I am learning about different global issues too, with the many Black Out Tuesday topics championed by the TREND staff. ??????????? ???? ???????? ???????????????? ???????????? ???? ???????? ????????????????????? : Working in a very safe environment that prioritizes interns' values and knowledge instead of making us do busy work or making us feel like we're dumb if we ask for clarification or help. The TREND staff also helps us feel connected to each member of the company by taking the time to conduct interviews each week to break down the usual hierarchical barriers in a successful business to humanize them and see the multiplicity of personalities of each team member. ??????????? ???????????????? ?????? ???? ???????????? ?? ???????????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ????????????????? : The reason is to help my older brothers, whom I looked up to, navigate being artists in the digital age and trying to grow their careers. I also felt like my strengths did not lie with being an artist myself, but still surrounding myself with musicians. Since I’ve always wanted to do something with music and see if I can help not just my brothers but other independent artists with their journey, my intentions shifted. I also find the business and music marketing aspect really interesting the way things continue to evolve with the evolution of the internet and social media. #musicindustry #musicbusiness #internship #earlycareer

I remind myself daily how fortunate I am to have access to this room! If you want three strong tips for coming into opportunities that interest you in life, read to the end of this article!! Over three years ago, I transferred schools and finished my degree work at UMass Lowell. I was feeling lost, however, because I had originally gone to Nashville to be ingrained in a music community. So, I decided to explore opportunities in Massachusetts. Not too long after, I connected with John and the team at Phoenix Down Recording and started an internship that led to invaluable experience in audio engineering and music production. After reflecting on my journey, three key steps helped me open this door: 1. Do NOT be afraid to DM or cold contact people who are not in your immediate network - I cold DM'd John, the studio owner, and asked how I could get involved. This led to me sending my resume and interviewing for an internship two weeks later. 2. DO be a sponge for knowledge and leave your ego at the door - I have been a musician all my life since the age of 7 playing guitar and learning music theory extensively. But, rather than coming into the studio with the attitude that "I knew best" I allowed myself to enter that space as If I knew nothing and was better off for it. 3. Learn how to be an effective collaborator - Especially in a creative setting, be the best at bringing out creativity in others, being open to their ideas, and leading with positivity. Feel free to share your helpful tips in the comments! For more information about my music and how I can impact your business, DM me or email me at [email protected] #Opportunities #CareerDevelopment #Networking #music #entertainmentindustry

Here's why I cried today: Storyville RD editing supervisor Allison Perry assigned our summer interns one final project before they head back to University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Here are the guidelines she gave them: Create a video recapping your time as an intern. Must have: voice over, introduction, horizontal & vertical format, music, graphics Must be one minute long, and end with "Describe the internship in one word." We reviewed the final projects as a team. Akiera Yanez & Erin-Lucca Pastorino SHOCKED us all. We all got emotional hearing the interns talk about their experiences. It wasn't their video editing technique or their use of graphics. They're talented and have continued to grow their skill set. It was the vulnerability they showed and how they talked about the intangibles. Anyone can teach skills. They don't need us for that. They each talked about how we made them feel- the importance of teamwork, inclusion, and a sense of belonging. In my branding and marketing sessions I always teach, "People remember what they feel longer than what they know." That applies internally, too. So proud of Akiera, Erin & our entire Storyville RD team. Linkedin doesn't let me upload two videos. Below you'll see Erin's final project. Here is a link to Akiera's https://lnkd.in/gUfGC_jK

Looks like summer music internships are popping up! Internships, in general, are a fantastic way to get your feet wet in any industry. I actually interned in local television before finding my way to music. I tried some things I might not have otherwise, like writing stories and filming trailers for local news. Even though I ended up on a different path, I still have some great memories from those internships. A few years later, I was overseeing interns in the mechanical licensing department, and about 60% of my interns went on to be hired somewhere in the company, some of which I'm still working with over a decade later. Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind: - Don't forget there are LOTS of jobs in the industry, so consider some of the less obvious/glamorous ones - you might find you like copyright or contracts! - Internships are also a great way to figure out what you DON'T want to do. That piece of knowledge is just as valuable as knowing your dream path. - When it comes to getting a job, your network is key, so take the opportunity to connect with people. - Be curious. Personally, I'd much rather an intern (or any employee really) ask me for context than just blindly go along with an instruction without seeking understanding. - Take the time to observe and navigate workplace culture. Learning soft skills is critical. - Listen. I can't emphasize this one enough as just actively listening allows you to learn so much. If anybody else has advice for inbound interns, or you're considering an internship and have questions, drop it below!

When I was pursuing my masters, I worked as a production assistant in an AD production house. I was young (21), far away from home in a foreign city (L.A), and to say the very least, it was an extremely intimidating space. It was full of directors, producers and what not. I got to experience a real "intern" experience there. Somedays I would be asked to set up the table, bring in food, coffee, so somedays I'd be filling in at the main desk whenever the person wouldn't be there and recieve couriers and what not. But regardless, I was never really allowed to weigh in my opinions during meetings. But even though the work ended up being such, I never stopped observing. The way they would close deals, what are they talking, how are they talking, how are creatives written, every little detail I kept registering in the back of my mind. Even though I was not allowed to actively be involved in projects, I observed and soaked in as much as I could. But I do wish amidst all that, I had a mentor. Someone who would have just guided me to do certain things a certain way, I feel that would have made such a huge difference. And today as I run my own workspace and company, that's one essential I seek to have for everyone who joins TAT. An opportunity to learn and grow together, where you're not on your own. It's a team for a reason right? And also, I do personally feel that no work is meaningless especially when you are out there to get that experience but for especially interns, one must be made aware of their entire work scope because sometimes it can get a bit tricky because as an intern we don't usually know what exactly we are signing up for, even today I have noticed the same in most spaces where interns end up becoming free extended labour with meek work boundaries. What are your thoughts? Did you find a mentor in your workspace when you needed one? What has your intern experience been like?
