Here are some key considerations for when looking at cybersecurity spend: 1. Technology vs people and processes 2. Cybersecurity shouldn't be fear-driven 3. Right-sized approach vs cookie-cutter 4. Collaborative and business-focused 5. Portfolio of services vs resellers of disparate technologies Let me break down these 5 considerations. 1. Technology vs people and processes Not all cybersecurity risks require a security tool or technology as a solution. Beware of the pitch for the latest security tool without thoroughly investigating alternatives, or right-sizing the tool you have. 2. Cybersecurity shouldn't be fear-driven An abundance of fear-based marketing is causing the cybersecurity conversation to be overly defensive and negative. Your partner should focus on helping you shape your program to ensure it adds value to your business strategy rather than suffocate it with an endless resource strain. 3. Right size approach vs cookie-cutter The proposed solution must be the right fit for your organisation. You can tell if your partner is proposing boiler-plate solutions when they are not diving into the root cause and exploring well-designed solutions. Not everyone needs that $300k tool. 4. Collaborative and business-focused A simple way to gauge this is by comparing the amount of talking vs. listening. There is limited time spent understanding the business and priorities. Instead, you hear a constant benefits pitch. 5. Portfolio of services vs resellers of disparate technologies There's no such thing as a silver bullet. Choosing a partner with a wide range of services and experiences with different technologies saves you long-term headaches. Less integration. Less overheads. More economies of scale.
