Just Announced! #GEVernova is set to supply synchronous condensers equipment for the Ana Maria and Monte Mina projects, to help improve #GridStability in Northern #Chile. A synchronous condenser is a large rotating generator improving voltage regulation and providing #energy security, #grid support and #stabilization. GE Vernova will also supply substation to connect the synchronous condensers island with the transmission systems. Chile has become a world-class destination for #solar and #wind energy, based on its enabling policies as well as its abundant resources of sun and breeze. Synchronous condensers will be critical to enable the addition of #RenewableEnergy to the grid, providing the needed inertia to help avoid risks of blackouts. This project adds up to the seven synchronous condensers GE Vernova has supplied in #Brazil in the past seven years, and to the recent order in the #UnitedStates where four synchronous condensers will be delivered to help improve grid stability in upstate #NewYork. Synchronous condensers are the unsung hero's of the electric grid. As the percentage of variable renewable generation on the grid increases they will be critical for frequency control and voltage regulation. Most large hydropower turbine-generators can also run as synchronous condensers with appropriate controls and balance-of-plant upgrades. On the US West Coast we have three of the largest synchronous condensers in the World (over 800 MVA each) at Grand Coulee. They are the backbone of the Western Interconnect. Ask me how we can continue to maintain the synchronous condensing capabilities on the grid and add more to help integrate more renewable energy!

NPAs are a real potential future for utilities trying to understand what tomorrow means for their gas infrastructure. As this paper, and our own research notes, the obligation to serve and local/state regulations can be a difficult barrier to getting all to agree to move off of their gas service on any given line. The customer is at the center of this equation. The energy industry spent decades pushing customers to the 'safer and cleaner' gas. So to expect customers to adopt electrification or non-gas alternatives in a handful of years is a tall order. Do we have time for decades of coordinated decarbonization education, no. But will this transition happen without fully engaging the end user, no. Let's get to know our customers better. Let's learn their decision-making better, let's build a coordinated approach around that. The Ontario Energy Board has?issued the final Notice of Amendments to the Distribution System Code (DSC) to enable flexible hosting capacity arrangements.?The changes will allow #electricitydistributors to use innovative technologies to connect more Distributed Energy Resources #DERs to the power grid, optimizing the capacity available on the distribution system.

As communities eye a clean energy future, does it make sense for utilities to keep investing in gas pipelines at the same rate? What if communities could reduce gas demand enough to avoid otherwise needed upgrades? Or even more ambitious: What if entire neighborhoods could be electrified, allowing aging pipelines to be completely decommissioned, rather than replaced? These are questions that some cities and utilities are asking themselves. Finding alternatives to pipeline investments is still an emerging idea, but enough examples now exist to draw lessons from, RMI's Mike Henchen told me.
