Derived from the Surinamese term for "???????????? ????????????," it commemorates a pivotal moment in history - the abolition of slavery in the Dutch Caribbean. This day is not just about remembering; it's a vivid reminder of the resilience, struggles, and unwavering courage of the ancestors who fought tirelessly for freedom and justice. Drawing inspiration from the Ghanaian proverb Sankofa, we are reminded to "go back and get it" - to look into our past and learn from it, ensuring that the sacrifices made were not in vain and that such injustices never occur again. It's a call to action for all of us, to come together, honor our shared history, and continue the fight for equality and justice in every corner of our society. Keti Koti is more than a commemoration; it reflects our commitment to upholding the values the ancestors fought for. It is a day to celebrate their indomitable spirit with love, respect, and a renewed pledge to promote equality and justice for all. On the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, IWGIA celebrates the richness of Indigenous Peoples′s cultures and their key role in achieving global peace and #sustainabledevelopment. ? Indigenous Peoples today represent more than 5 000 cultures. They are the inheritors of unique languages, knowledge practices and ways of relating of the world. ?? Indigenous Peoples′ right to practice and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs is part and parcel of their fundamental right to #selfdetermination. The UN Declaration on the Rights of #IndigenousPeoples states that “Indigenous peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories and aspirations” (Art.15). #WeAreIndigenous #UNDRIP

???? István Matkovics is a facilitator of the #CIVICSCOUTS AT #WORK programme in #Hungary. We asked him about the main challenges faced by Hungarian companies and how civic education could help overcome them. His answer: "I think that citizens are not fully aware of their civil rights and human rights, or do not know how to exercise them. This state of affairs is also due to the effects of the environment: unpredictability, hate speech, and insecurity, which create a constant state of stress for people, not only in their private lives but also at work. This leads to an attitude that is difficult to get people out of and to activate them. The CIVIC SCOUTS programme is first of all an opportunity for a company to face up to its problems by identifying the areas where they have problems. Secondly, the programme provides a method and help for the company to look for solutions (ones that suit them) and to implement them. I believe that if a company recognises that it has problems and does not hide them, and works to reduce the stress on its employees, that their opinions are important, that their conflicts can be resolved, that democratic and critical thinking is allowed and useful - then it not only gives the company the opportunity to operate more efficiently and effectively but also to impact society through individuals.
