What Is Clocking Bourbon Barrels?? Ever heard of clocking a bourbon barrel? ?? During our visit to The Bardstown Bourbon Company, we learned all about this essential skill in the bourbon-making process. Clocking involves rotating a 500-pound barrel so the metal hoops align with the wooden rails, and the bung (the barrel’s plug and weakest point) is positioned at 12 o’clock—or ‘bung up.’ Placing the bung at the top prevents leaks caused by pressure buildup inside the barrel during the aging process, ensuring a secure seal as the bourbon matures.? The Bardstown Bourbon Company team demonstrated their expertise while preparing for the World Championship Bourbon Barrel Relay, where handlers must roll barrels with precision—ensuring the bung is correctly aligned and the branding (or ‘money side’) is perfectly visible on the left. Any misaligned barrel adds extra time to the tea’s overall run, making precision and consistency critical to success.?
