Starlink is now providing direct-to-cell communication, and this isn't just a make-believe project - it's live and being tested right now. Meaning anyone with T-Mobile - who Space X has an exclusive agreement with for the first year of direct-to-cell service. And who has signed up for the open beta should have access to texting anywhere they can see the sky. No more dead zones! This is a complete game-changer. In the wireless industry we are all too often focused on speeds - whereas the customer is looking for something completely different, service that just works. And having a connection is where that starts. Just access to texting is huge compared to no connection at all, this is a game changer. Next up they'll be testing phone calls, then later down the line - data, likely with limited data-usage applications first.

I thought I'd share a crude, impromptu, video on my thoughts about Starlink. Starlink has been game changing for so many of our rural clients. There are lots of things that I don't like about the gen 2 product (mainly the propriatory leads and no Ethernet), but you can't complain about the performance. I am looking forward to getting my hands on the latest gen 3 kit. "Out of coverage area" is becoming history now but it also signals much more than that. Starlink announced worldwide beta testing of Direct-to-cell sattelites starting this month that can be connected with your ordinary LTE phone. Currently it is aimed for emergency calling but it is not hard to guess that next is full global mobile coverage. Big disruption is coming and in previous years I shared few posts on this subject noting that Telcos are to get ready for this advanced new-commer. Having direct access to millions of subscribers MNOs are to leverage on last mile access advantage and provide diversified services to increase stickiness.
