These disorders disrupt motor or sensory functions without an identifiable neurological cause, making them challenging to diagnose and treat. To further support legal professionals, case managers, and medical experts, we are launching a series of webinars this autumn. The first in the series will focus on Functional Neurological Disorder—a must-attend event for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of this area. ?? Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) can help individuals with functional neurological disorder (FND) by addressing feelings of shame and self-criticism, which are often prevalent in these patients. By fostering self-compassion, CFT aids in reducing anxiety and stress that can exacerbate FND symptoms. Take a look at how our paper explores this!

This raises some really useful points about how Compassion-Focused Therapy can be applied when working with patients with FND. There are ways that we as physiotherapists can promote self compassion and encourage our patients to engage in more self compassionate thinking and behaviour when they are undergoing rehabilitation with us. This could include: - Ensuring we cultivate warm, supportive and therapeutic relationships with our patients. - Setting small, specific and realistic goals, monitoring and celebrating progress made along the way. - Supporting our patients to reframe critical thoughts around parts of their rehabilitation they are finding challenging. - Recognising when our patients may need to access talking therapy for support of their mental health and possibly previous trauma.
