The Mix justifies the means | Television Sometimes I promise myself that if I hear again in a platform documentary that a popular pre-social media figure was the first influencer or that any important and independent woman was a feminist before she knew it, I throw the TV out the window. Then I calm down, what is the fault of the device for what we do with it. In Spain we have gone from despising our popular culture to exploiting it with templates, to making superficial hagiographic products that give some information to the neophyte viewer, but that contribute hardly anything in form or substance to those who already know the subject of the work, other than the pleasure of enjoying archive images. When, in addition, if one wants to see the archive, the best thing to do is to dive into the huge catalogue on-line from RTVE Play and enjoy watching the TV that was made 30, 40, 50 years ago. I ask the Kings to refine the search engine on the platform and not stop expanding the list of audiovisual documents available to the user. Also from RTVE Play (and Cat3) is Brutal megamix, Another good reason not to throw the TV out the window. The three episodes of this documentary series tell two fascinating stories. First, the creation of mix records in Spain in the early eighties, with the founding of the Max record label by Eduardo Campoy and Miquel Degà, the competition with Blanco y Negro, the evolution of the music recording industry dance Spanish and the thread that connects its creators with Vale Music and, therefore, with Big Brother and OT. Characters typical of a Mad Men tacky and unprejudiced. And walking in parallel, the criminal backroom that it hid: beatings, kidnapping attempts, murder threats and other protocols of mafia courtesy. All the part of the events was already told by the newspapers and the TVs then, but the upside and the downside together is what gives us a complete album, if you allow me the metaphor perhaps too much. ad hoc. Nobody needs in Brutal Megamix hagiography, or bring up famous young people giving their opinions even if they had nothing to do with it. Even if Narcìs Rebollo wears a Sonic Youth t-shirt, everyone – including him – knows that they are talking about Sonia and Selena. He is sincere and captivating, I don’t ask for more. On April 18, 1930, the BBC announced, “There is no news.” With today’s 24-hour news cycle, it feels like notable events are happening every second. But on April 18, 1930, nothing newsworthy occurred — at least according to the British Broadcasting Corporation. At the start of its regular news broadcast at 8:45 p.m., the BBC?announced, “Good evening. Today is Good Friday. There is no news.” This unexpected declaration was followed by 15 minutes of piano music, before the radio station resumed its broadcast of Wagner’s opera?Parsifal. Though curious listeners were likely dumbfounded by this bold assertion, there were no other national networks to contest the BBC’s claim. That’s because the BBC held a nationwide monopoly on delivering news on television until 1954, and on the radio until 1972. In reality, April 18, 1930, was quite the notable news day, as nationalist rebels conducted a raid on British forces in India, which was then part of the British Empire. But communication lines were cut during the attack, making it impossible for the BBC to be aware of the news. Under the impression there were no major headlines that day, the network felt no need to lower its broadcast standards solely to fill time. The BBC decried sensationalist news reporting, and shied away from covering local automobile accidents and fires in favor of big-picture affairs that had global repercussions. In the end, the small news department — which consisted of just two editors and two sub-editors at the time — determined that April 18 simply had no events worth commenting on. ?? “It’s really problematic. We are not merely troublesome we are in a red alert situation in many many markets and as politics gets more polarized we have to decide what we do about institutions.” I don’t know a lot about PBS but folks I’m talking with have been thinking about this issue for a while, especially with many of the social impact companies shutting down, like Participant and Topic Studios. Outside of high awareness factual or biopic based programs IMO it’s very hard to connect with new movies and shows that feel like they’re leading hard with their social political agendas. Do we double down on niche or find more creative (and authentic) ways to tell stories that connect us? Maybe show us what drives a character that we can all relate (or aspire) to; show us new ways to see classic plot structures before trying to change hearts and minds. I believe films like Dune and Civil War did this effectively. Same with Fallout series. I’m going to try to take the extra effort to see these things in theaters this summer or watch them on first weekend on streaming. #storytelling #challenge

The BBC's Potential Shift to a #Subscription Model: A New Era for Public #Broadcasting? ?? A recent article from Simon Jenkins in the The Guardian have brought to light the possibility of the BBC transitioning from its traditional licence fee to a subscription-based model, reflecting a broader shift across the #media landscape. With challenges such as funding debates and evolving viewer habits, this potential change aims to modernize how the #UK's public #broadcaster sustains itself in the digital age. The BBC has been a cornerstone of public broadcasting, funded by a licence fee paid by UK households. However, as streaming giants like #Netflix and #Disney+ reshape the way we consume media, there’s growing pressure for the BBC to adapt its funding structure to remain competitive and relevant. A #hybrid model—combining public funding with subscriptions—has been floated as a solution. Reflecting on the broader #subscription economy and its potential to revolutionize industries, here are some key insights into what this could mean: ?? ????????????????? ???? ???????????????? ??????????????????????: With audiences increasingly drawn to on-demand, ad-free content, a subscription model could bring the BBC closer to the way people consume media today. Offering flexibility and personalization could drive deeper user engagement. ?? ?????????????????????? ?????????????? ??????????????: Shifting to subscriptions provides a predictable and diversified funding base, reducing the broadcaster’s reliance on government-backed licence fees. This would allow for greater investment in high-quality, innovative programming. ?? ?????????????????? ???????????? ?????????? ???????? ??????????????????????: The BBC has a unique mission to provide free access to information and entertainment for all. Transitioning to a subscription model would require careful consideration to maintain inclusivity while offering premium, exclusive content to subscribers. At Billwerk+, we understand the complexities of navigating such transitions. Subscription models, when done right, can foster #trust, #loyalty, and #sustainable growth. The BBC’s potential move underscores the importance of adaptability in ensuring businesses—whether public broadcasters or private enterprises—remain future-ready. #Leadership #Innovation #FutureOfWork #BusinessGrowth #Technology #CustomerExperience #Strategy #ChangeManagement #GlobalTrends #DigitalStrategy #BBC #Billwerk plenigo GmbH Sofacto

?? June 7th: BBC's Return to Broadcasting & Starting Over On June 7th, 1946, the BBC resumed regular television broadcasting after a seven-year hiatus caused by World War II. This momentous event marked a significant step in post-war recovery, symbolizing the resilience and determination to rebuild and move forward. ?? The Return to Broadcasting The first program to be broadcast was the Mickey Mouse cartoon, the same cartoon that was last shown before the suspension, symbolizing a return to normalcy and continuity - more than mere technical restoration. ?? Modern-Day Parallels The BBC's return to broadcasting after a long hiatus draws striking parallels to recent military conflicts, as well as other global disruptions such as COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic forced many industries to pause, adapt, or transform. As we emerge from these disruptions, we are reminded of the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the spirit of starting anew. ?? Starting Over After Disruption In our professional and personal lives, we might face unexpected (or even planned) disruptions that require us to pause and then restart with renewed determination. Whether it's navigating the aftermath of a global pandemic, returning to work after an extended long maternity leave, recovering from a severe illness, or coming back to the workforce after a sabbatical, finding the motivation to start again can be challenging but ultimately rewarding. Here are some key lessons we can draw from the BBC's experience and apply to our own lives: ?? Resilience and Adaptability Just as the BBC adapted to the changing circumstances during and after the war, we must be resilient and adaptable in the face of disruptions. Embracing change and finding new ways to overcome challenges is crucial for growth and progress. ?? Optimism and Vision The resumption of broadcasting was a beacon of hope and optimism for a war-weary nation. Similarly, maintaining a positive outlook and a clear vision for the future can help us navigate through difficult times and emerge stronger. ?? Community and Connection Broadcasting played a vital role in reconnecting the nation and fostering a sense of community. In our lives, staying connected with others and seeking support from our communities can provide the strength and encouragement needed to start again. ?? Celebrating Small Wins The simple act of resuming the Mickey Mouse cartoon symbolized continuity and a return to normalcy. Celebrating small milestones and achievements can boost morale and provide motivation as we work towards larger goals. BBC's return to broadcasting provides inspiration to navigate through challenges and build a brighter future by embracing resilience, optimism, community, and celebrating our progress. ?? "It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me, and I'm feeling good." – Michael Bublé, 2005 ??Let's be the best version of ourselves!

Broken News S2 This weekend's binge-watch was "Broken News" Season 2 on Zee5. I have to say, this series is a huge miss for international OTT giants like Prime and Netflix, and a significant win for Zee5. The series boasts an impressive star cast, including Jaideep Ahlawat, Indraneil Sengupta, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Akshay Oberoi, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Taaruk Raina, and the ever-beautiful Sonali Bendre. Sonali Bendre’s character, Amina Qureshi, really stood out for me. She plays an almost fictional character in today’s media landscape – an honest, ethical journalist who upholds the truth above all else. It’s a refreshing, if somewhat idealistic, portrayal. For outsiders, "Broken News" offers a fascinating glimpse into TV newsrooms as potent battlegrounds for the minds and hearts of viewers, reflecting the larger war raging outside. It highlights the intense competition and the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists in their quest for their own spin. "Broken News" is a fantastic series, though it feels like a beautifully crafted obituary for real journalism. It’s packed with drama, suspense, a tadka of real-life incidents like electoral bonds, and just the right amount of violence. Sach aur jhooth ke is jung mein, khabar ko bechta hai kaun, Jo sacchai pe chale, woh sachcha patrakaar aakhir hai kaun? Long live journalism! In the meantime, give this series a watch! #Journalism #News #TVChannels #NewsBroadcasting #Broadcastmedia #Media #Journalists #NewsAnchors

What do European TV Commissioners Look For? | FilmBudget.com Worldwide #tv #television #tvseries #story #IP #commissioning #streaming #programming #broadcast #broadcasters #stories #series #platforms #genres #audience #content #entertainment #filmandtelevision
From Variety: Hosted by the Iberseries & Platino Industria forum and emceed by María Valenzuela, the panel included speakers Morad Koufane, France Télévisions’ director of international and young adult series; José Pastor, director of #cinema and fiction at?Radiotelevisión Espa?ola?in Spain; Michele Zatta, commissioning editor in charge of international co-productions for Italy’s?Rai - Radiotelevisione Italiana; and Laura Mae Harding, commissioning editor for international co-productions at?ZDF?in Germany. Here are five key takeaways from the enlightening conversation. Co-Pro Plan A and Plan B The day’s conversation started with a brief explanation of the European Alliance, a co-production agreement launched in 2018 by three panel participants, RAI,?France Televisions?and ZDF. Zatta, Koufane and Harding all praised the six-year-old pact, which will unveil a new project to be backed at MIA in Rome later this month. Outside of the Alliance, Koufane says that anytime France Televisions is looking for a partner, “We have a Plan A, and a Plan B. Plan A is my colleagues,” he explained, motioning to the other broadcasters on stage. “When we have a project, we first present it to them, and they say yes or no. When we have a no, we go to Plan B, and that is the platforms.” Public broadcasters as the best bedfellows is hardly a surprise, given recent cutbacks on commissions from global streamers. With so many platforms tightening their belts, it’s little wonder that broadcasters are looking to one another to help get projects off the ground. Independent producers are, too. IP is King The panel’s participants agreed that established IPs are among the most attractive propositions to any commissioner. For Pastor and RTVE, the appeal of established IP has always been there but become more of an imperative lately, given the uncertainty of the current production landscape. “We’re in an environment where we are taking less and less risk, and IP is getting more and more important,” said Pastor. “For us, it’s critical.” Crime Thrillers Work Everywhere Each panelist agreed that their audiences have an insatiable hunger for crime series but that each market has its own nuances and codes that audiences expect in their shows. Room for Improvement with the easyJet Generation According to Zatta, young audience demographics are changing and becoming more international, requiring commissioners to take a more diverse approach in picking their projects. Introducing Domestic Audiences to the Global Programs When it comes to distributing breakout international hits outside of their domestic territories, the streamers are the unquestioned kings of the hill. That said, broadcasters are still keen on finding foreign gems of their own. Whether through commissions, acquisitions or co-productions, broadcasters are always on the lookout for something to surprise viewers. #TV #streaming #Europe

Great session yesterday with BBC big cheese Anna Tatton-Brown. Anna is one of four Deputy Editors who oversee BBC News Channel - that's what the corporation now calls its rolling news platform, since News 24 and BBC World merged about a year ago. Some of Anna's main points included: - the BBC's biggest challenges are declining engagement with news, levels of trust falling and financial cutbacks - cross multi platforming is paying dividends. That means you can add visuals to a podcast, then put it on TV. It appeals to a broad audience. - the BBC's focus has been to engage younger people, who are going to TikTok and Instragram to find their news - but they also need to engage with women. - the channel has a big appetite for expert commentators. Whilst the BBC has its own reporters, experts boost the range of voices used. (The channel receives our Directory of Expert Broadcast Speakers - that's a great way to get on. Contact me for more details) - the news agenda continues to be busy, but there's still an appetite for business and lighter stories too. Feel like you've missed out? Join our mailing list so you hear about our Small Talks (held most months, mainly online) and annual Big Talk.
