Today we celebrate 80 years since Allied forces, on D-Day June 6th 1944, began the push to rid Europe of Nazism. In today’s world, technology evolves so fast that major breakthroughs can often seem like pedestrian evolution. But several big breakthroughs in electronics in 1944 helped to ensure the D-Day success. As we thank many of our family ancestors and veterans, here are 3 of my favorite D-Day technology stories which, like a lot of things today, we take for granted: 1. Electronic warfare has been around for a long time, but the spectrum war in Ukraine is clearly different. Why is that? Over the last two decades we've seen some pretty big changes in RF technology. Smaller, more efficient radio components, software defined RF systems, and increasingly more powerful compute platforms have combined to create a world of devices in the military and civilian domains that rely on the spectrum to connect to the world and understand where they are in the world. Just think about the evolution in cell phones over the last two decades. Civilians and militaries do more with the spectrum than ever before. Of course the flip side of those technology developments is that it's easier than ever to build or repurpose equipment to monitor what's going on in the spectrum and deny everyone else's ability to use the spectrum. Electronic warfare used to be a "big" capability accessible only to the most advanced nation states. It's now a "medium" or "small" capability accessible to anyone who can afford a software defined radio and knows what they're doing. For these reasons, we're seeing a new kind of protracted, evolving spectrum fight for the first time, but not the last.
