Yes, but are we using appropriate data in appropriate ways? Perhaps not for the majority of #smallholder farmers worldwide who produce most of the food consumed in Asia and Africa - what they need to know is what practices work where and for whom - and to tackle that, we need performance data about different options in real farm conditions. Advances in IT make it possible to collect these data with farmers using an inclusive #citizen_science approach BUT that is not where the big investments are going. On fertiliser, #agroecology options for using #biological_nitrogen_fixation rather than industrial N are vital for both #food_security and #planetary_health - reducing: dependence on global market pricing, #GHG_emissions and #pollution that aggravate #biodiversity loss. But providing advice on these sustainable agriculture options is a different ball game than rates of application of mineral #fertilzer from a bag. We need data ! Yes, But we must be strategic and intentional about it. Getting the raw data into an advisory tools is the NextAgenda. Soil information is on my mind, certainly, it will not deliver the soil health balance we want alone but in combination with agronomic and climatic data. The Africa Soil Initiative is poised to run the action, hopefully, the "S" in VACS will still resonate with SIA and AFSH-AP in Africa.

Agricultural policy focused on targeting individual smallholder farmers usually results in a grand scheme in keeping the farmer more deprive! A strengthened cooperative system and a well defined value chain linkages is the surest way of bringing value to the investments in supporting smallholder farmers, making farming beneficial all.
