Thank you also to AECOM who hosted this event I stated that commissioning is a process of assurance that delivers correctly performing buildings on time and on cost. I also stated that successful commissioning, and by association successful overall project delivery, is based on collective ownership and accountability This requires fairness. It also requires one of mankind's rarest human alliances - a true team Fairness is the quality of treating people equally and in a way that is right.?Exposure to the possibility of loss or other adverse circumstance – otherwise known as risk – and how this is managed - is inextricably linked to fairness A true team shares common objectives, nurtures one another, acts in ways that enhances each other's powers and is interwoven by a thread of mutual trust. Crucially, a true team also wins and loses in equal measure Unfortunately, still too much of what we do in this amazing industry of ours is not fair and is not undertaken by true teams. This has been sharply been brought into focus by the recent collapse of ISG and other contractors around the world However, I am optimistic about the future because I what I see in the young built environment professionals that I am fortunate to frequently work with As an industry, we have been incapable of addressing the fundamental flaws that we have. Anyone that doubts this needs to read the Rethinking Construction report produced by Sir John Egan in 1998. No matter what software, hardware or other innovations we apply, it is all fruitless when the basic human characteristics of absolute fairness and true teamwork are absent from project delivery Our current generation of young engineers and project managers recognise this and I think are better equipped to address it than us that have come before them. As older built environment professionals, we have a duty not to corrupt them and to lead by example
