The Ballad of Doug and Dave Alligator hunts, even staged ones, might not be on everyone’s to-do list. But for Doug Lawler and younger brother Dave, a charity auction presented just the right opportunity for an adventure the two could sink their teeth into. If it didn’t bite first. So, the story goes that back in 2014 the brothers Lawler, CEOs at the time for rival shale giants, kicked things up a notch from their everyday hunts for oil and gas with a trek to the swampy waters of N.C. Reese Energy Consulting today spotlights the dynamic duo once dubbed the Peyton and Eli Manning of energy. At the time, Doug was the newly anointed CEO of Okla. City-based Chesapeake Energy. Dave, chairman and president of bp America soon to become CEO of BPX Energy in Houston. Both overachievers and pranksters, they were raised in Denver by parents who surrounded them with books, a no-nonsense work ethic, and a push toward math and science pursuits, and went on to earn petroleum engineering degrees. In the gator-infested marshes of N.C., where the brothers’ staged hunt offered gun or archery options, it’s hardly surprising the Lawlers chose a more up close and personal experience. Jumping atop a banked, jaws-snapping, nine-footer, the two worked in tandem to force close the alligator’s mouth and seal it shut with duct tape—an exercise that didn’t come without a fight. But that’s where the real joy lies in the memory. Not in competition to outdo the other, but because success—whether shared or apart—is simply in their nature. Doug Lawler currently serves as CEO of Okla. City-based Continental Resources, a position he’s held since 2022. Dave Lawler has now been named CEO of Kimmeridge Texas Gas, an Eagle Ford operator with 148,000 net acres in South Texas. What do you think? For the second time in as many months, the power delivery system in Houston—the fourth largest city in the US and the so-called Energy Capital of the World—is brought to its knees by a relatively minor storm... despite the average power customer being at least 50 miles inland. But, yeah, let's go ahead and electrify everything. We went through the storm. As these things go, it was relatively small in size and short in duration. We've driven around much of the city since. We were born and raised here, and know what the city and streets look like when a major storm hits. This wasn't it. No way over 2.5 million households and businesses should be without power right now. Meanwhile, drive in certain more affluent neighborhoods in the city right now, and you'll be greeted by a chorus of privately owned backup generators—all expensively, but successfully, humming away. And they are all powered by... you guessed it... petroleum products. In less affluent neighborhoods, there's no such harmonizing hums. The lesson? If you want to create a world of haves and have-nots, hand your power system management over to a bunch of virtue-signalling dilettantes and let them start jacking around with things. And be sure they keep a focus on making sure Earth's temps in 75 years remain below some arbitrary limit—not on making sure the current system works. You'll start to see the inequalities sprouting before you know it. To be clear, the effects of creeping infrastructure rot and steady policy incompetence we've seen at the power generation level in Texas are now evident on the transmission and distribution side of the grid. Alas, the state now loudly projects a culture of non-perpeformance... or maybe just not caring... across its once widely admired power sector. Well done, Texas leadership. This video that provides a glimpse of the size of wind turbine blades. The proposed offshore wind projects for the Central Coast of California, are slated to use turbine blades 350 feet in length or a diameter of over 700 feet. The speed at the end of the blades can reach up to 170 mph, which is deadly to soaring birds such as Albatross, Pelicans, Terns, Shearwater and Gulls.

LANDMAN….my hot take. Is it dramatized? Of course it is, but so are the attempted, most realistic shows e.g. swamp people, shark tank, and even college football. Does is portray, at a minimum, the dangers these individuals face daily. I think it does a better than fair job. Does it follow the woke narrative? No, it actually makes great points in a great way surrounding the need for the oil and gas industry. Lastly, it’s starring Billy Bob and Ali Larter, that’s a win in my book. Conclusion? It makes for good TV, gets the industry some great PR for the difficulty of the job, and paints the industry in one of the best lights it’s been shown in years.
