According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), approximately 2.2 billion people globally have some form of visual impairment or blindness. A significant portion of those with severe visual impairments rely on assistive technologies like screen readers. Recently, I have worked on creating various types of charts for my project using the Chart.js library. These charts were visually appealing, but I realised they lacked accessibility. The charts were created using the canvas element, and screen readers couldn’t read their data. I’d like to share some implementations I have made to improve the accessibility of these charts. ????????? 1. Assign Appropriate Role and ARIA Label Use role='img' for the canvas element, and aria-label or aria-labelledby to provide clear and meaningful labels for the charts. 2. Add a Description If providing a description of the chart in a separate container, give the description a unique ID. Then, add an aria-describedby attribute to the chart with the description’s ID. This will help the screen reader understand the relationship between the chart and its description. 3. Screen Reader Only Text Create a screen reader-only description. Use a class like ‘screen-reader-text’ and hide it visually with CSS. The text won’t be visible on the webpage, but screen readers will still read the description to provide insightful data to users. 4. Create Alternative Tables Based on the Same Data Create a table element as an alternative option with the same data. Allow users to choose which data view they prefer to read on webpage.
