Admit What You Don’t Know “Don’t be afraid to say you don't know and come back?with an answer." 2. Your Goal Should be to Learn "I think sometimes we should pause and take a step back when we're in a new space. I think we'll have an opportunity to learn something if we are open to learning and listening, instead of coming in to try and fix something." 3. Don’t Speak for the Community “That means listening and having people join us at the table not just once or twice, but repeatedly. They're the community we're serving, and they must be represented and have a real voice." 4. Build a Powerful Team "You do not have to be an expert on everything because community engagement should be ‘a collective’ work. Find your niche and others who have different skill sets than you, so when you all come together, you will be a powerful team." 5. Partner with Elected Officials "Don't be afraid to seek out those individuals. They want to hear from and get to know what people want and what they need. Building that network is so important." 6. After months of career transition, I'm thrilled to announce a new chapter in my professional life. This journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions - from anxiety to excitement. It involved intensive goal-setting and self-reflection, reminding me of Erno Rubik's wisdom: "Some contradictions are not meant to be resolved, but to be embraced." One such contradiction is the perception of government jobs versus private sector roles. While initial salaries in government might be lower, the stability, benefits, and long-term growth potential can lead to a fulfilling and financially secure career path. I'm excited to share that I've joined the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) as a Research Data Specialist. In this role, I'll bring my CRM expertise and data visualization skills to enhance the effectiveness of recovery operations. My unit's focus on utilizing data analytics to drive improvements across the Recovery Directorate is a mission that deeply resonates with me, especially after the LNU fire that roamed through my small rural community in Vacaville. I'm embracing the opportunity for growth, job fulfillment, and stability in public service, while balancing family responsibilities with impactful work for Californians. Heartfelt thanks to all who've supported me, especially my mentors, managers, and friends from BMRN. Special appreciation goes to my hiring manager Gary at Cal OES for his invaluable feedback and belief in my potential. I cherish feedback as a gift and continuously strive to improve from it. As I embark on this new journey, I'm reminded that career transitions, while challenging, often lead to exciting new perspectives.
