You can influence how someone feels the moment they step “into your theatre.” As a performer, I have always believed that “the show starts the moment they walk into the theatre.” Let me explain… Many performers think the show starts the moment they get on stage. But the reality is that the show begins the moment the audience arrives at the theatre. Their experience is influenced by every detail: How easy was it for them to park? Was it simple to get a drink? Was there engaging music playing as they found their seats? These seemingly small details can change how they feel, creating curiosity and interest before the performance even begins. Every moment before I walk on stage is an opportunity to shape their experience. How can you apply this? The moment someone enters your premises, you have an opportunity to influence their feelings.

There are two content areas that I LOVE—musical theatre and creativity. So imagine my excitement when I discovered a new book by creativity researcher James Kaufman and musical composer Dana P. Rowe, PCC, CPCC, titled Lessons in Creativity from Musical Theatre Characters. Given that it was outside of our regular season, Matthew Worwood and I decided to do a special episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast with James and Dana to explore the enriching intersections of theater, creativity, and education. We discussed how theater can empower students to play, experiment, and gain insights into diverse cultures and lifestyles. James and Dana also shared their personal experiences and insights from their collaborative work, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for students to express their creativity. As part of the episode, we engaged in an activity from the book where we chose show tunes to represent our current state and where we aspire to be. For my current state, I picked "You Can't Stop the Beat!" and for where I'd like to be, I chose "Defying Gravity."
