I recently took my son to Eagle Rock along the Pacific Crest Trail. You can reach it in two ways - guess which route we picked: 1. Drive to it, park, and walk 100 yards.? 2. Hike around 7 miles and climb 1000 feet in elevation. We went with option 2. The trail began along a small creek, climbed through rolling hills, and crossed a wide boulder field before reaching the summit.?The hike was not uneventful for my son - it included several stumbles, scrapped knees, and self-doubt about whether he could make it.?But he kept at it, kept pushing, and made it to Eagle Rock. Sitting atop the summit, eating our well-earned snacks, he took in the landscape. Then he saw the parking lot right behind us. I hadn’t mentioned the alternate route, but as soon as he saw that parking lot, his reaction was quick: “We could have DRIVEN here?!?!?!” He was right - we could have driven to the top and had a short walk to Eagle Rock. I almost blurted out, “But what we did builds character!” like Calvin's dad from the “Calvin and Hobbes” comic. Instead, we chatted about the hike. It was hard. He tripped and fell along the way. He got tired and hungry. But then we talked about how he learned that he could overcome all those things. We talked about how the summit only felt so high because we started so low. If we had not started in the valley, we would have missed the beauty woven into the difficulty along the way.?We would have missed the little wildflowers, the crawfish in the creek, and the lizards skittering away between the rocks. The metaphor of that hike has broad application. There’s value in the journey, purpose in the process, and growth in the climb. Opportunity is everywhere.??? **** I find joy in helping others climb mountains in life and work. Meters from death ?? We left our first campsite in the Dordogne ???? yesterday and headed east to the Ardèche. [Had to google those spellings??] Anyway, the satnav was clearly smoking something as it took us through this monumental route, 5hrs and 40 mins, my worst nightmare being in the car that long. It avoided all the main roads, even though we didn’t specifically tell it to, and it got to the point where we were heading up this huge mountain on a very narrow road. On one side, there was just this monumental drop all the way up and down. I mean, you are rolling at least 50 times down the hill before we get to the bottom of it in the campervan. That’s a bad day! Now, the wife was driving, she was all over it, but I was in turmoil ????. My anxiety was through the roof. I’ve had a few RTAs so I’m actually a really nervous passenger. But also have a worst-case scenario thinking issue. Which means basically I go straight to the very worst-case scenario whenever there’s anxiety. To the outsider, it was probably quite funny. But the thing I learned was when I’m not in control [in this case, driving] I worry about the outcome. And that’s true in other areas of my life. ? If I drop the ball in my business, I’ve lost control, I overthink the outcome. ? If I’m inconsistent with training, I’ve lost control, I overthink the outcome. And so on. I’m not saying this is the way that you will live your life. I’m just sharing this perspective and how important taking control is to reduce anxiety and overthinking. And these are theories I’ll be teaching on my self-mastery course at the end of April. So that you can learn to be in more control of taking care of business and your personal Life and the show goes on Details to join the waiting list are below ???? ?? Course start date is 22nd April. ?? Comment ‘GIVEAWAY’ ???????????? ?? Let me know where to send you the information. ?? Check your welcome email. ?? Sit tight till the 10th April. #SelfImprovement, #MindfulLiving, #Discipline, #LeadershipSkills, #TimeManagement, #FamilyFocus, #EmotionalIntelligence, #PersonalGrowth

I recently completed the Austin marathon with two of my good friends and colleagues, Jack Block and Matthew Bonarrigo. 26.2 miles of asphalt, sweat, and solidarity. One step after another. All three of us moving in the same direction. A few weeks before the marathon, Matthew and I were walking during a recent lunch break and got to talking about his experience hiking the entire Applachian Trail. I asked what his favorite part was and he dove into the profound connections he forged with fellow travelers along the trail. One thing that stood out to him was how quickly these connections took root. A single day on the trail could foster bonds that felt like they'd weathered years. We brainstormed the reasons behind this phenomenon. The lack of cell service and the endorphin rush from hiking were factors, but what intrigued me most was the act of moving in the same direction—literally and metaphorically. The Appalachian Trail offers just two paths: northbound or southbound. Each hiker, regardless of origin, is propelled by a common purpose, a collective pilgrimage towards a unifying goal. It's this communal journey that fosters the deepest connections. I thought a lot about this concept for the duration of our training and especially as we slogged through Austin on race day. Thankfully this doesn’t just apply to the trails of Appalachia. No need to ditch the day job or sacrifice personal hygiene for weeks on end. Finding "trail partners" doesn't require such extremes. It's about positioning yourself to cross paths with those who share your metaphorical journey, or in our case, those who share the actual path. At a minimum, the price of entry is a stiff shot of courage, but the relationships formed on the other end are good ones.

I enjoy and find useful a lot of different types of post on LinkedIN... I really enjoy the content Alexis Bertholf ? posts... it is fresh and different and heck, who hasn't had to try and explain their job to their parents, spouses, kids, etc. It is something we all have in common... And -- there is a good business and personal lesson in this exercise as well. Honing explanations or descriptions of difficult or complex topics is an important skill... You never know when you might have to use that elevator speech to describe your company, or your solution, or what you do! Alexis' family did a great job! My favorite was "you connect cords and explain stuff". ?? Great work bringing different and valuable content to this sometimes buttoned down platform!
I asked my family to explain what I do for work - Here's how it went: Every year as long as I can remember, we take a trip up to my grandma's cabin on Seneca Lake. Especially now that we're all older and live in different places, it's so special to come back and visit. Lake week is my favorite week ?????? P.S. Who do you think had the most correct answer??

You’re doing it all wrong… stop doing this NOW if you want to get anywhere with your goals.. Making one Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) and not breaking it down. Dreaming big is just the start; the real magic happens with daily action that transforms those dreams into reality. Whether it’s training for an ultramarathon or orchestrating the perfect family camping trip, it's the consistent efforts, no matter how big or small, that bring us closer to our goals. Here’s how I break it down for my personal and business goals: → 3 goals for the year → 3 - 4 initiatives per quarter to support those goals → 3 meetings per quarter to review those initiatives → End of each quarter review subsequent quarter to create new initiatives This past weekend, I maximized the early morning hours, diving into 6 focused hours of work and an 8 mile-run - all before my family’s day began. Remember, every step is a step forward! What steps are you taking today to construct the future you envision?
