The £1million price tag that the publisher tried to sell the archive to institutions (universities or HEI libraries presumably?) was prob too high for a sector that is having its very own Titanic moment. But the shortsightedness & fear around the preservation of this important literary archive is astounding. And I don’t buy the last sentiment that the now dispersed archive is saved by the market / private collectors… personal archives are not stable and sustainable solution to archiving important cultural and literary heritage.

We must recognise literature as a cultural artefact. ?? It is no surprise that literature favours certain voices, and by extension marginalises others. The white Western narrative voice has been prevalent in literature for a long time, leaving no room for the recognition and celebration of other cultures. It is a challenge that many university curriculums at the moment are attempting to unpack (with varying degrees of success). But how do we go about acknowledging this and then addressing it? "People will wherever possible invent its drama according to its own history, spirit of the times, customs, opinions, language, national biases, traditions and inclinations" (Gottfried von Herder) I am thrilled that my essay in which I explore this topic has recently been published in the Edinburgh Student Literary Journal. It is a comparison of two theoretical frameworks - Gallagher's 'New Historicism' and Hartman's Critical Race theory article 'Venus in Two Acts'. Though I am proud of this piece of work, I must acknowledge that it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. The exploration of reimagining and redefining previously marginalised narratives is just beginning. There's lots to be done! If you have a minute, read my (very short) essay here... ?? https://lnkd.in/gV4S8BxY #literarycommentary #criticalracetheory #reimaginednarratives

Looking for a weekend read…. This essay series focuses on the roles of the arts, creativity and culture in helping to navigate provocative and divisive issues in our communities. This publication is the result of a partnership between the British Council, Ulster University and the University of Canberra, initiated as part of the 2022 UK/Australia Season. The essays, poems and artwork contained within the series powerfully demonstrate, collectively and individually, how arts research can inspire us to think differently about injustice and inequality in our societies. They show how artists, performers, poets, curators and cultural researchers can all trigger meaningful, and potentially reparative, engagement with past trauma and conflicts and their lingering impacts in the present day. With a primary focus on the contexts of Australia and Northern Ireland, but including also discussions relating to Japan, Canada, Chile and attending to themes that are of global relevance, this volume, and the wider Difficult Conversations project of which it is part, present a diverse, eloquent and provocative statement on the potential of the arts and culture to encourage dialogue and to help build trust and understanding. #culturalrelations Skinder Hundal MBE Stephen (Steve) Stenning OBE

VIDES (Volume of Interdisciplinary Essays) 2024 is here! ?? The twelfth volume of our annual online journal features thirteen essays showcasing the remarkable ingenuity and variety of work from students in the second year of the Master's in Literature and Arts. There is something here to capture the interest of every curious reader, with articles exploring the Arthurian tradition, the history of British exploration and imperialism, issues of race, gender, and sexuality, the history of science, and even the history of time itself. Each of the articles in this volume focuses on two artefacts, a word we use to encompass not just objects that might be found in a museum but all kinds of products of human endeavour, including objects, images, and texts. Students are asked to choose two artefacts of different kinds and analyse them alongside each other, showing how they shed light on larger historical conditions or developments. ??Read online for free: https://buff.ly/4dHOnI6

A moving story and tremendous project. Records like these are so important to post-conflict reconstruction, the day after and generations after.
It’s known to Irish historians as the saddest book in the world because it only shows what was lost. Early on in the Irish Civil War, a fire in the Public Record Office destroyed a treasure trove of records dating back to the Middle Ages. But out of the ashes, due to the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, duplicates of lost records have been found in far-flung libraries and archives around the world. “The Library of Congress, for example, dug up dozens of volumes of lost debates from Ireland’s 18th-century Parliament.” ?? … @Peter Crooks Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Trinity College Dublin The National Archives, UK Public Record Office of Northern Ireland The Huntington The University of Kansas University of Chicago Notre Dame College Yale University Harvard University

Vient de para?tre : Jean-Louis Haquette et Helga Meise (dir.), "From #Press to Readers: Studies in the #Materiality Of #Print Culture" The seven articles in this volume, written by French and German specialists in book history, address various aspects of the materiality of print culture, examining both the processes of book production and the paths of book circulation. They explore notions of composition, collection and circulation of texts and images, from manuscript to books designed for specific readers. They are based on a variety of sources from archive documents to the study of specific manuscript or printed copies. The perspective is transnational, taking at Gutenberg's Europe as a space for the circulation of print, and concerns early modernity, from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. https://lnkd.in/dMvgAY6P
