Exploiting Talent? Employers, please Do Better! I recently came across a job posting that left me truly awful ??. It offered a full-time internship requiring 40 hours a week for a mere $50, with a typing speed requirement of 50 words per minute, including other responsibilities. This position, despite being labeled an "internship," clearly demands significant commitment and skills. This is a sheer reminder of compensation disparities in our globalized workforce. While some might view a lower wage as an advantage when hiring talent in developing countries, it's important to remember these are fellow humans facing rising living costs just like everyone else. Also, the location shouldn't be an excuse to undervalue someone's time and expertise. Employees Deserve Better: regardless of location! ??Let's break this cycle of exploitation. Dear Employers:- → Please research living costs in the regions you're sourcing talent from. → Recognize the value of all skills and experience, regardless of location. → Offer competitive wages that allow individuals to live with dignity, even in entry-level positions. The Silent Gap: Why Lower-Level Employees Deserve More (Stats Included) During my internships, I witnessed a troubling trend: lower-level employees, the engine of many organizations, received minimal raises (under 18%), while middle management enjoyed significantly higher increases (32-36%). This raises a red flag. A recent study by The Pew Research Center found that pay inequality leads to decreased employee morale (72%) and increased turnover (68%). Doesn't our current system undervalue those who significantly contribute to success? A fair compensation structure should reflect value. Lower-level staff often lay the groundwork for achievements. Denying them proper compensation can be demoralizing and hinder their growth. Here's how we can create a more equitable system: Transparent Salary Bands: Clear salary ranges for positions based on experience and qualifications promote fairness. Data-Driven Performance Reviews: Objective metrics and documented achievements, not subjective opinions, should guide evaluations. Several years ago, I faced rejection for an HR internship because of the interviewer's bias toward my accent and ethnicity. During the interview, the VP of HR subtly suggested that I redirect my focus to accounting, alluding to the prevalence of Asian Americans in that field. Undeterred by such discouragement, I made a personal commitment to defy expectations and pursue a career in Human Resources. I truly believe that no external force should dictate the course of our professional journey; it is a narrative we must script ourselves. Today, I am delighted and honored to announce my appointment to the faculty of The HR Management Program at San Francisco State University. This milestone underscores the profound impact of resilience and determination in overcoming racial and ethnic biases. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Afitap Boz at San Francisco State University for graciously offering me this wonderful opportunity.
