Children are not elite athletes. We lose more to sport through attrition programs (the strong and best survive) and parental aspirations (win at all costs) mentalities than we retain and teach a true love of sport at any level and age. What is important ? Simple skills done well, team and culture, personal improvement and a love of sport. Putting children first will always provide better outcomes.

With the Euros kicking off tonight (come on Scotland!!!), we’ve been discussing how important our school facilities and leisure centres were to us growing up. When asked about their experience, Caitlin Morris, Southampton Women and Wales footballer said “Having access to local recreation grounds and sports fields was vital for my career. Not only did it ensure I had adequate space to attend scheduled training sessions with my clubs, but it also gave me an opportunity to do additional work as an individual to further develop”. Landscape architects go beyond designing spaces; we create environments that nurture communities and well-being. Well-designed sports facilities in schools and leisure centres offer more than just a space for lunchtime games. They are champions for grassroots sports, providing a nurturing ground for young athletes to develop their skills and passion. These facilities also act as hubs for community events, bringing people together. We ensure accessibility with features like ramps and multi-use courts, prioritise safety with proper drainage and lighting, and design age-appropriate playgrounds that promote physical development and social interaction. The impact goes beyond the school day, encouraging students and visitors to spend more time outdoors, leading to improved physical health and a connection with nature. High-quality facilities like running tracks, pitches, and courts provide a nurturing environment for young athletes to hone their skills. This can be the springboard for future sporting success, feeding into local clubs and national teams. A great example is Olympic medallist Colin Jackson, who credits his local leisure centre for fostering his love for athletics. At OOBE we wonder how many future Euros heroes will be from some of our project work! Supporting image of Hexham Middle School & Queen Elizabeth High School (with Galliford Try): This project showcases our expertise in designing inspiring learning environments that extend beyond the classroom and nurture a love for physical activity.?The facilities have allowed grassroots football to continue through a very wet summer and winter where other clubs only have access to grass pitches resulting in many games & practice sessions being cancelled. This afternoon I moved things around so I could take 2 hours to attend my kids races at their school sports day. They both won their races and I was super pleased for them, especially my daughter who isn’t as confident as my son (the picture is of his race.) The reason I’m sharing this on LinkedIn is threefold. Firstly having a flexible employer London City Mission and a CEO who empowers and doesn’t micromanage, Graham Miller, is something I really appreciate. This approach from employers is excellent for #worklifebalance and #wellbeing. Secondly as I reflected on children’s sports day I was reminded of the important life lessons that could be found in the process. And it isn’t winning. I love winning and aspiring to win, and that my kids won. But not everyone can win. What inspired me today were the kids that weren’t necessarily as talented in a particular race and yet ran with absolute determination and tenacity, and a positive attitude. Those attributes will equip them well for life beyond school. And lastly and perhaps most importantly, what inspired me were the kids and parents clapping and cheering on the child who was coming last in each race, and was last by some way. The act of encouraging and cheering someone on is so powerful and so important for children to see. To see the joy the encourager finds in being an encourager. And the way the person being encouraged appreciates it, and how it affects them. Children can grow up to be many things in life. But whatever they do, whatever we do, let’s be encouraging. Because society does that bit better when we intentionally seek to be encouraging. #Encouragement #Lifelessons #Wellbeing

"A focus on sporting success above all can compromise children’s wellbeing and safety. Young people may be exposed to environments that are highly pressurised, psychologically demanding and often tolerant of abuse." This article in the conversation is well worth a read. Just like women are not small men, children are not small adults. Despite this, talent pathways often treat them as such. "The way in which the sport is delivered to children and hiding under the label of ‘high performance athletes’ is driving people away from the sport they once loved.” We know children predominantly play sport to improve their skills, make friends and enjoy the activity. Things like a hypercompetitive focus, or experiences of abuse results in dropout from sport, as well as potential long term consequences to social, physical and mental wellbeing. Children have a right to play sport in an environment that is free from harm, and it's our responsibility to ensure that when children are playing in community sport or at elite levels that 'excellence does not come at the cost of the fundamental rights and safety of young people." 2023 Data from the Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada Survey Series on People and Their Communities: "Running was the favorite sport among the highest number of people in racialized groups. Participation rates were as follows: Chinese (40%), Japanese (35%), Southeast Asian (35%), South Asian (33%), and Black (32%) people engaged in running more than any other sport. Additionally, 37% of people belonging to two or more racial or cultural groups (i.e., multiple racialized groups) also favored running." Adequate track and field facilities are essential to promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in sport spaces across Region of Waterloo.

This is disgraceful. Every child has a right to play and excel at sport and if that is not the case, whether because of chronic public school underfunding or the privatisation and commercialisation of children’s sport, it needs to be fixed. Aside from basic opportunity being equal for all children, without distinction based on economic means, Australia should be careful to ensure that two aspects of sport remain strong. The long term health benefits of playing sport young, which correlates to a lifetime of participation and the hundreds of billions of dollars saved in mid life and old aged care. And the immensely important inclusion across cultures that sport offers outside of the classroom and playground, which are very different. Sport’s contribution to bringing kids of all ethnicities and faiths together and breaking down barriers is immense and something we let decline to our great detriment. Fund public schools.

The Survival of the Fit team applauds Spelman College for being a beacon of excellence in promoting physical wellness. Their mandatory physical education requirement sets a standard for educational institutions at all levels, from elementary schools to colleges, should aspire to follow. This policy agrees with our belief that a healthy body is the cornerstone of a sharp mind. How did they do this? They eliminated interscholastic sports competitions for the 10% of students participating for daily physical activities for all. By adopting similar physical education requirements, educational institutions can make a substantial contribution to the holistic development of their students, equipping them not only academically but also physically and emotionally for the challenges ahead. By incorporating physical education and health education into their curriculum, Spelman College emphasizes the importance of its students' well-being. This helps cultivate lifelong habits of physical activity and wellness among them. This is the type of revenue and program shift we should see at all schools. Another camp done and another amazing week of new experiences & friendships. It’s fantastic to see S&C be seamlessly intergrated into these camps. Well done Strathallan School S&C in youth should be compulsory and widely assessable. ??Injuries ??Performance ?? Self-Efficacy ??Resilience ?? Discipline Rob Anderson talks about how 99% of S&C happens with 1% of the population (elite athletes) and the massive gap that is left for the other 99% of the population having to figure it out for themselves off TikTok and getting frustrated with a lack of progress (worse, getting hurt). Dr Helen Collins, PhD, FBASES, ASCC has shown how valuable S&C is for those who perhaps don’t enjoy typical team sports. Dr. Ben Pullen has demonstrated how valuable S&C in schools can be. S&C is not just lifting weights, 95% of the S&C at these camps did not require any specialist equipment. What barriers are there to getting S&C into schools, clubs & communities?
