As a civil engineer, my primary focus is on ensuring that the designs proposed by architects can be transformed into practical, safe, and compliant structures. This requires a deep understanding of the technical aspects of construction, including materials science, structural analysis, and geotechnical engineering. It is my responsibility to ensure that the structures we design can withstand the loads and forces they will encounter throughout their lifespan, including environmental factors such as wind, seismic activity, and soil conditions.

One of the most important aspects of my role is ensuring regulatory compliance. Building codes and regulations are in place to protect public safety and ensure that structures are built to a high standard. It is my job to ensure that our designs meet or exceed these standards. This involves staying up-to-date with the latest codes and regulations, conducting thorough reviews of design documents, and working closely with regulatory agencies to secure the necessary approvals and permits.

An example I have seen over the years is the government and zoning codes are always changing for each district, so it is imperative to have all the zoning issues addressed first prior to sitting down with the clients. I like to sit down and sketch a drawing quickly to have a discussion and a direction for the project. Once we all agree then we move forward with the proposal, with stipulations for appropriate approvals. Developing new projects on major roads need to meet criteria for fire trucks, ponds, traffic flow and parking & more!
