In 2021, it was estimated that 77 percent of eligible youth in foster care aged 14 to 21 left care without receiving federally funded services to prepare them for adulthood and independent living. Providing preventative and supportive care to foster youth can significantly reduce the number of them who become involved in the criminal justice system and experience homelessness after emancipation. Our Agency opposes the proposed #CABudget cuts to critical services for foster youth. These cuts threaten to reverse positive strides made in recent years to increase stability/permanency for foster kids and prevent homelessness for current and former foster youth. Specifically, we urge our state leaders to safeguard the following programs: Family Urgent Response System, Housing for Foster Youth in Supervised Independent Living Placements, and Housing Navigation and Maintenance Program. #SFHSA #ProtectFURS

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation I am thinking of the many children and families separated and physically and emotionally harmed by the residential school system and by the individuals who operated residential schools. This is not a historical issue. Indigenous children are still being harmed through separation from their families and communities. According to 2021 census data, over 50% of children in foster care in Canada are Indigenous. We must invest in understanding the systemic issues and discrimination that lead to this over-representation and we must invest financially to support early intervention and prevention services for Indigenous families, particularly services lead by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Yet more research (this time from Centre for Social Impact UNSW) finds Housing First works... "New research has found a community-based housing program for people transitioning out of homelessness has been overwhelmingly successful in keeping a safe roof over their heads, while also improving health and employment outcomes and reducing contact with the criminal justice system. Notably, 85.8% of the 380 clients in Sydney remained in stable housing three years after the program began. There were reported improvements in employment (a 2.6% increase) and education (a 2.3% increase), a greater sense of autonomy, and fewer interactions with the criminal justice system." StreetSmart targets funding into Housing First programs, often providing flexible brokerage and emergency relief to support people into tenancies and to retain tenancies. We have also funded assertive outreach and registry weeks as a first point of contact with people experiencing chronic homelessness. #homelessness #endhomelessness #housingfirst #housingcrisis #outreach #brokerage #philanthropy
