For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." ?? Empowering the next generation of political leaders: Jane Caroline Minchew summer on Capitol Hill. Political science major JC Minchew recently completed an internship with Majority Leader Steve Scalise's office (LA-1) in the U.S. House of Representatives. During her summer experience, JC engaged directly with constituents – addressing their concerns and inquiries – and giving tours. She also helped conduct research for the legislative team and attended hearings for certain bills and took notes. “I enjoyed this. Hearing both sides of the argument was my favorite part,” JC said. JC's key takeaways: "The most valuable thing I learned is how important connections are. You get out what you put in. Taking the initiative to meet people and set up meetings is crucial – no one will do that for you." Her advice to fellow students: "If you're on the fence about applying for an internship in D.C., do it! You get to work in an office that doubles as a museum. You'll see firsthand what it takes for a member of Congress to do their job." This experience affirmed JC's career aspirations and opened new pathways in political science. My role models are my parents, because they have instilled in me a sense of respect for all people and a desire to work hard on any task ends up in my hands. What advice would you give to other young AANHPIs who are interested in public service? One important piece of advice is to really have an open mind for anything, whether it is an internship, a volunteer event, or even a chance to meet new people, all are important in the world of public service. In addition, working on communication and writing skills is imperative, as both are essential towards success in the world of politics. Finally, putting in your best work, at all times, is so important because it will get noticed by employers and co-workers and will lead to you building and strengthening your reputation!
