How to network as an introvert (part 2 of 3) ?? 4???Schedule coffee chats Send “cold” messages to people who you think are cool, brilliant, or interesting (BINGO for all 3) Ask for “warm” intros from friends, colleagues, and coworkers (even your dog) ~ Share your target groups (mentioned in part 1) and ask them to connect you to one person that they think you should talk to ~ or go to your friend’s LinkedIn network and find a person you would like to talk to ~ Follow along to a networking mapping video if you’re feeling overwhelmed (linked in comments) Free networking platforms to check out: Lunchclub: pairs you up with friendly strangers for “lunch chats” depending on your wants/goals adplist.org: chat with mentors and industry experts LinkedIn: I like to come here to find mutual connections and to send “cold messages” (can be overwhelming), sharing a great “Networking with LinkedIn” video in the comments ~ Tip: for cold messages, start with alumni if you went to college ?? Template: “X! My name is X and I’m a X. I’m also [insert common connection]. I would love to learn more about [insert what you want to learn]. Would you be open for a 20 mins chat?” ?? Example: “Nina! My name is Sondra and I’m a university recruiter. I’m also Cal Alumni. I would love to learn more about recruiting challenges at a Series B startup, peer to peer. Would you be open for a 20 mins chat?” 5???Prepare for coffee chat ??30 mins (I tend to go overboard when I prepare, so setting a time limit for me was crucial to not “get lost in the sauce”) ???Ask yourself this question: what do I want to learn from this person? Research the person’s LinkedIn. I love looking at who the person follows, their posts from the last month, and experience (with a focus on career pivots) ~ If a specific work, article, or experience captivates me, I gave myself 30 more mins to go down the rabbit hole ???Write down 3 specific questions for coffee chat (link to great questions shared by Tian Shi in comments) ???Stay tuned for part 3 next week! ???Part 1 of this series: https://lnkd.in/gdx2arQD? ???Fellow introverts, any coffee chat tips you would like to add? Comment below! ???Follow Sondra Y. for digestible, mindful, and personal #earlycareer content ????Context: I’m reclaiming networking on my own terms. As am introvert, 1:1 coffee chats are my jam. This took me a while to learn, so I wanted to share what has worked for me in hopes of expediting your search. ??Tip of the day: Practice active listening. Repeat back what other people say in your own words to show that you’re paying attention. Then feel free to ask for clarification or a follow-up question. Are you sure about lunch club? I went to join but it warns that it has access to all your private info — and I mean all- plus the reviews are abyssal, saying it used to be good but no longer delivers and took away location search, making it almost useless. Anyway, I didn’t join. I’m curious about the other though. Thanks for info. ??
I really love this and will definitely be putting it into practice! Thanks for sharing!
As an introvert I like to have a few weeks of back and forth DMs until I feel comfy enough to coffee chat : ) and that's why I love social media
Thanks for the shoutout, Sondra Y.! We love this! ??
