Feeling queasy. I have recently heard from someone I care about deeply first-hand experiences of being sectioned under the Mental Health Act and admitted for acute mental health care. Seeing the CQC Outstanding label plastered all over the Trust's website, I felt very queasy. It's an example of a massive gap between the established "system" of power, regulation and governance and genuine human needs and experience. There is much to learn from the lived experience of people being admitted to hospital for mental health care and treatment, which conventional governance approaches often seem to miss, overlook or put in the "too difficult" category. I'm curious to experiment with something: If we spend less time feeding an insatiable appetite for "assurance" (essentially to assuage fears) and more time on creating conditions for the safest, most human-centred care possible, what energy, ideas, meaningful conversations and real improvements might this release? Perhaps other colleagues might have perspectives to offer on this?
