We continue to focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), and its role in the (re)insurance industry, with Q3 taking a look at AI's role in central business operations. Included in the report, as always, are InsurTech companies and individuals of relevance to the theme - in this case those companies who are bringing AI in risk to life in our industry, and those experts who have a view on how and what is developing. Some Q3 data highlights; * InsurTech saw USD1.38 billion in global funding during the third quarter of 2024, the highest level since Q1 2023 * Of that USD1.38 billion, 55.5% of global InsurTech funding went to USD100 million+ mega-round deals (5 deals total) * InsurTech saw 77 deals in Q3’24 — a nearly 4-year low * 63.4% of Q3 2024 InsurTech deals went to AI-centered InsurTechs * 54.5% of Q3’24 InsurTech deals went to InsurTechs focusing on central business operations * The majority of tech investments from (re)insurers were mid-stage funding rounds To understand what is driving these numbers and view our insights on AI, please access the complete report. Today, I had the pleasure of attending #AM_Best's informative Reinsurance Market Briefing at #RVS2024. Here are my key takeaways: ? - The market outlook remains positive, with sustainable underwriting margins. - There is investor pressure for underwriting discipline to continue for a longer period. - Unlike in 2001 and 2005, AM Best does not anticipate a new wave of reinsurance startups emerging in 2024. This is due to the different market structures today, with investors having alternative options such as #ILS with lower liquidity risks and more attractive exit opportunities. Record inflows into ILS seem to prove this. Additionally, non-capital-intensive models like MGAs are gaining attention and attracting investors with higher multiples. - Reinsurers' relative underperformance in recent years compared to other sectors has made investors cautious about the sustainability of current attractive ROEs. This sentiment is echoed by what we hear in our own work with sovereign wealth funds and other large asset owners. - The use of #AI in underwriting was discussed, with the suggestion that smaller solutions may be more appealing to reinsurers than large-scale platforms. Reinsurers need to convince regulators and rating agencies about the quality, limitations, and control of their AI models. With generative AI being self-developing by definition, I believe this will need to be further explored.
