What are some good questions to ask at a engineering job interview? This is a fairly common questions that I receive and I wanted to share my thoughts here as well as get some input from you guys. Here are 4 of the questions I recommend most often: 1. How do you define success in this position? This is important as you want to have defined goals to aim to achieve. 2. What mentoring/development programs or opportunities are present? I am where I am today because of the guidance I received early in my career and this is also the reason I "pay it forward" with my own mentoring. Without guidance, the chances that you sink or much higher. 3. Is this position open due to growth or turnover? High turnover is a big red flag. 4. Will I have the opportunity to interact with other divisions/engineering roles in the company? If you want to specialize in one area, that is fine, but overall, having some broad base interactions is helpful to you can see the bigger picture even if you only work on one specific task. What would you guys add as suggestions for younger engineers to ask at an interview? #TheEngineeringMentor #engineers #engineering
Well said, Sir.
Number 4 is what got my attention as a student. I feel broad base interactions definitely would help for roles like an internship.
I would vote for question 2. Though I am not an engineer, I think that is really important Sol Rosenbaum PE, CEM !
One of my favourite questions to ask interviewers has been "What do YOU love about working here?" It always seems to bring out interesting stories and helps give you a sense for what working at a company might look like.
Great questions to ask. Well said Sol!
Somewhat depends on hiring organization. Lotsa good established company answers so far. More business questions for startups. And then what's appropriate for those that fit in between.
“What gaps do you see between what I’ve shared and what you are looking for?”
Good ones! No1 is revealing for me: if it's difficult for the manager to define that's usually not the kind of leadership I thrive under. I hadn't thought of No4, a position with multi-disciplinary exposure is so important for early career engineers. Along those lines they could ask about whether there will be customer interaction or formal presentation opportunities - both important for career development.

3 年I'm a final year engineering student with only vac work left. While I'm applying to multiple companies for this opportunity, I am preparing for interviews with hopes of being successful. These questions you share and those on the comments section and your other related posts have helped big time! Thank you
