The transition from military service to civilian life is often challenging, with finding meaningful employment being a major barrier. The Southern California Veterans Study surveyed 3,188 veterans (42% from Los Angeles, 19% from Orange County, and 39% from San Diego) to explore the challenges they face, including securing meaningful employment. The data was collected between July 2022 and June 2023. Below are the top three reasons why finding work remains difficult. There will be a day not long from now, when your military service will be but a chapter in your life story. Some of you are leaving the service soon. Maybe at the end of this month, next month, the start of the new year. The idea of no longer solely identifying as a service member may seem impossible when you're standing at PT formation at 0630 for another battalion run. But the day is coming. Whether you're the most senior General or the most junior Airman, assuming the very best of health for you, you will spend more time as a civilian post-military than you did as a service member. The best way to prepare is to network with others who've already made the transition, and in particular those doing what you may want to do. When is the best time to start networking? Yesterday. The next best time? Today. Veterans helped me turn the page on my last chapter when I retired from the service four years ago. They can for you too. I've heard people I respect share how while their service was and will forever be an integral part of their foundation, they are no longer constrained by that identity. Embrace the change even if it's scary. Every single person who ever served in uniform left at some point. You're going to be ok. Reach out to veterans. Reach out to me.
