Great summary of the power of mutual aid.

“Let’s build something together. And let’s build someone up together.” Eric Liu, cofounder and CEO of Citizen University is a visionary, builder and catalyst of better civic futures.? This wonderful article by Drew Lindsay in The Chronicle of Philanthropy captures the outsized (and even unexpected!) impact that can happen when people come together from different backgrounds and experiences to lift each other up and advance each other's work in additive, generative, expansive - and yes, joyful ways. There’s so much I’ve learned - and gained - from being a part of this extraordinary community. Below are a few additional personal nuggets I've observed about why Civic Collaboratory conveninings are truly "mutual aid on steroids": ?? "Commitments of Capital" can come in multiple forms. Capital is often talked about in a narrow way usually related to financial resources. Instead, we can think about giving and receiving capital through an abundant lens: social capital of connections, relational capital of supports, intellectual and experience capital of ideas and know-how. Most importantly, the human capital of our presence, curiosity and care. ?? Words and rituals matter. When you respond to requests with offers of help, start with the phrase “I commit...” (not "I think" or "I could"). “I commit” communicates clarity, intention, and action. ?? When bonds of trust and affection are authentically cultivated and honored, the most incredible things can happen. The partnerships and friendships I’ve made through this unique community have fueled innovative, human and heart-lead civics efforts that have reached tens of thousands of people. And then guess what happens? When you experience the personal, social, and communal impact of this kind of environment, you want to re-create it for others.. across diverse geographies, ideologies, and communities. Long-term success depends on word-of-mouth recommendations and client loyalty derived from this trust. # 02: Enhancing Brand Image A Christian company's brand image can be greatly improved by having a strong local presence. Businesses can establish a reputation as leaders who prioritize community well-being before financial gain by being approachable and making a visible contribution. Customers who have similar values and are seeking companies that support their principles may be drawn to this favorable image. #03: Fostering a Supportive Network Local engagement allows Christian businesses to build a supportive network of like-minded individuals and organizations. This network can provide valuable resources, advice, and partnerships that can help the business grow. By collaborating with other local businesses and community leaders, Christian entrepreneurs can create a synergistic environment where everyone benefits. #04: Inspiring the Next Generation When Christian businesses prioritize local engagement, they set a powerful example for the next generation of business leaders. Young entrepreneurs can see firsthand how integrating faith with business practices can lead to success and fulfillment. This inspiration can encourage more individuals to pursue their ventures with a community-first mindset, perpetuating a cycle of positive impact. Conclusion: Putting the community first is not just a strategy; it’s a reflection of Christian values in action. By engaging with the local community, Christian businesses can strengthen their foundation, build trust and credibility, enhance their brand image, foster supportive networks, and inspire future leaders. While local changemakers and social entrepreneurs (and waffle enthusiasts) swirled around us in eddies of conversations and collaboration, Kendra Luta and I chatted about connection. We tried to put our finger on why events like Rotary Charities of Traverse City's "Connecting with Changemakers" differ from conventional networky events. They certainly lack that shallow, transactional, yuck factor we've all seen elsewhere: "Yes, hello there. I sell jet ski insurance. You also sell jet ski insurance. Wonderful! Let us exchange tiny, easily lost pieces of contact cardboard and never talk again." Kendra and I posited briefly that maybe what we were watching unfold was just a nonprofit thing. But we quickly acknowledged that that's too simple an answer. Eventually we realized it's not about the types of organizations people represent. It's about the passion they bring to work they know matters. As we listened to conversations around us, it's true we heard some light talk about family updates, local gossip, and summer plans. But mostly what we heard was people talking about their meaningful work. Recent victories, unexpected setbacks, exciting new opportunities. People wanted to talk about their work. They were sharing deeply and listening attentively as others did the same. Genuine curiosity. Honest excitement. Problem solving. Productive what if-ing. Relationship building and relationship renewing. Forging mutually and financially beneficial partnerships isn't a “business thing.” Coming together around work which matters isn't a “nonprofit thing.” They're all part of the same continuum. Lasting impacts don't start in the boardroom or behind large desks. They start slowly, often unassumingly. They come from welcoming environments in pleasant, productive surroundings. Lasting impacts don't happen when people are expected to network, or to advance interests, or to produce. They happen when changemakers are encouraged to come in quietly and connect in meaningful ways. And sometimes, they happen over waffles.
