In my early career, nothing was more important to me than events like this. Why? ?? Firstly, because your power, your leverage, your credibility, your market knowledge comes from your NETWORK. I'm sure we are all tired of hearing the phrase "your net worth comes from your network." But you are living in denial and capping your potential if you don't fully embrace this. When I was an ambitious 20-something and I had no children to worry about, I spent every evening networking. I joined my industry networking group, and I would often pay for events out of my own pocket that were more personal development focused to make connections with other ambitious people and learn from people who were experiencing the type of success I wanted to achieve - the HARD TRUTH is that you need mentors and peers who share similar goals and you SHOULDN'T LIMIT yourself to only looking for them inside the current company you work for. ??Secondly, I went to these events to be a sponge. To soak up every bit of knowledge and learning I could. And this doesn't just come from what you hear from the stage. It comes from the networking experiences you'll have - getting used to those moments of bravery where you approach the speaker, or even a group of people who are already chatting away to interrupt and introduce yourself. You will have to be brave to advance your career so this is epic practice. When I was an employee in my early 20s, it was going to events like this that developed my belief that I could be an entrepreneur. The belief that I was going to be a lot more successful in my own company... and guess what... when I did take the leap to start my own business, I had a great network to help me do it. ?? The best thing is that because I literally went to hundreds of events in my 20s, now I am in my 30s and do have children, I feel no guilt in saying - "I am going to give this one a miss because I have a 2 year old and he is my priority right now." So whilst I won't be attending the Women with Metal conference this year. I will celebrate Kirsty Davies-Chinnock and the team and thank them for their sacrifice for creating this fabulous opportunity for people in our industry whose priority it is to LEARN and CONNECT right now. Without events like this, I would not be where I am right now. So good luck with the event guys! I can't wait to hear all about it.
