New in our Micro-Climate Blog Series from Marcy Rockman! "At the end of September this year, an historic point was reached: England turned off its last coal-fired power plant, ending a 142-year history of coal-fired power in the country...[w]hat happens in climate change is inextricably linked to human action...for this sort of event is where trajectories of history and present-day real-time meet." ?? Did you know that Southeastern South America, from Brazil to Argentina, is a hotspot for bee diversity? A recent study has some eye-opening projections for 2050. Researchers modeled the distributions of 18 bee species and found a significant decrease in species richness in the northern regions. Most bees are shifting their ranges south to more stable habitats. Surprisingly, some resilient species are more vulnerable than expected. This study highlights the need to consider multiple factors when assessing species’ vulnerability to climate change. Past natural shifts in #climate have played a significant role in shaping the fate of numerous species throughout #Earth's history. A recent study spearheaded by researchers from the University of Oxford delves into the fossil record to gain insights into the factors predisposing animals to extinction due to contemporary human-induced #climatechange. ? Leveraging over 290,000 fossil records, the team compiled a comprehensive dataset of crucial traits influencing resilience to #extinction. “If the localized climate change is large enough, it could lead to significant extinction globally, potentially pushing us closer to a sixth mass extinction,” said lead author Professor Erin Saupe, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford. ? This research revealed that the investigated traits collectively influenced the likelihood of extinction. Species facing heightened climate change exhibited a higher probability of extinction. Those inhabiting extreme climates were at a heightened risk of extinction, particularly animals restricted to narrow temperature ranges. The size of the geographic range emerged as the most influential factor in predicting extinction risk. ? Read more at https://cutt.ly/nw9QxFS5 ? #worldenvironmentday #biosphere #environment #ecology #anthropocentrism #stewardship #coexistence #life #love #reverenceforlife #loveofJesus The Situation: "World Environment Day?is the biggest international day for the environment.?Led by the United Nations Environment?Programme?(UNEP),?and held annually since 1973, it?has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world." The Theme: "Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience" The Message: "We are Generation Restoration. Together, let’s build a sustainable future for land, and for humanity." The Lethal Lacuna: Any mention or consideration of the other species who call earth home, the remainder of God's creation who are affected, adversely, by our self-centered depredations. The Only Remediation: Adoption by mankind, including its benighted representatives in the UN, of a reverence for life as our common, motivating ethos. This is a life affirming ethos that ALL life has innate worth and value, that our sacred duty as Homo sapiens is to serve as stewards to the rest of the denizens of this shared home, to protect, assist and enhance the actualities of all God's creatures. Only when we acknowledge our role as a part of nature with a duty to serve, not nature's overlord with a right to exploit and dominate, will this planet and all who reside on it be free to live according to their choices, not ours.

Climate change is rewriting history, putting 1,223 global heritage sites at risk. From the Sundarbans to the Sun Temple in Konarak, rising seas and extreme weather threaten our shared history. Protecting these sites isn’t just about conservation as many natural World Heritage sites contribute to global climate stability by storing vast amounts of carbon and providing critical ecosystem services Read more - https://lnkd.in/gN_sgv37 #climatechange #heritagesites #history

“So here is a sense in which the nations, to deal with this problem, have to make a change from their traditional concern about themselves and not about the planet and the species - a change from the traditional short-term objectives to longer-term objectives. […] I think that what is essential for this problem is a global consciousness, a view that transcends our exclusive identifications with the generational and political groupings into which, by accident, we have been born. The solution to this problem requires a perspective which embraces the planet and the future because we are all in this greenhouse together.” #climatechange #climatecatastrophy #systemschange

Trees are on the move! Trees migrate slowly — generation by generation — to keep up with shifting climate conditions. But with climate change accelerating, they may not be able to keep up with rapid change. That’s where assisted seed migration comes in — a strategy through which researchers and forest managers help trees "move" to climate-adapted locations. By planting species in areas where they’re better suited for future conditions, we may be able to create resilient forests ready to face tomorrow's challenges. While the approaches to assisted seed migration vary, American Forests is proud to support projects using sound science to make strategic decisions for implementing assisted seed migration on the ground. Learn more about when, how and where assisted seed migration fits into climate-informed restoration in the newest edition of American Forests magazine: https://lnkd.in/e6Tan_4a

“We need to be thinking about how we invest in our oceans as the source of solving our problems.” ?? Ocean explorer Philippe Cousteau argues that colonizing other planets may not be the cure-all solution we've been led to believe — and that our oceans are what truly hold the key to our future. Talk about blue ocean strategies!
#Ocean areas beyond national #jurisdiction are one of the great remaining commons of the planet and critical to sustaining life on Earth. Representing two-thirds of all oceans and 95% of occupied habitats, these areas are home to millions of unidentified species, all of which play an essential role in absorbing the heat and storing excess CO2 needed to slow the impacts of #climate change. This World Economic Forum white paper looks into the impacts of the High Seas Treaty on the governance of #maritime areas beyond national jurisdiction and provides guidance on how to navigate the challenges and opportunities that may arise. #SDIM24 Dive in here: https://lnkd.in/e35t8-rt
